No Fishing Signs At Forty Foot, Sandycove, County DUblin

Sun Jan 11, 2009 9:40 pm

In case you missed this story (http://www.independent.ie/national-news ... 82423.html) from just before Christmas (2008), there is a fishing angle (see also the thread about DLR CoCo). What a shame these elected reps miss some of the key substantive matter at stake, instead of the signage itself.
Forty Foot 'sins' sign lays down law but sparks uproar

If "stately, plump Buck Mulligan" was to join the thousands of Christmas visitors and swimmers who flock to the historic Forty Foot swimming spot in Dublin's Sandycove this year, he would be confronted by a 15-feet high "motorway sign". The sign has just been erected by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council right at the entrance to the famous Gentlemen's Bathing Place, which is the setting for the opening of James Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses.
sign of the times the b@stards. I used to fish a spot a few years ago right under sorento terrace, was great mark, until that last house got redeveloped and was allowed put fencing halfway down that mini cliff

Folks - vigilance, whereever you are on this island.

Check regularly yourself with what's going on in local councils, keep up to date with local media, the next time you pass a planning permission notice near your fishing spot why not stop and read it, listen to seascapes on RTE, and read this forum on your favourite website (use RSS for updates).

Funny you should say that. I just banged in an FOI request to determine the cost....

PC world gone mad. As a young teenager we used to cycle down to the 40 foot and have great crack jumping off the diving board on a low spring tide, and swim when it was choppy. No harm ever came to us because we where careful and knew our limitations. Nanny state or what.

We used to fish for Wrasse off the back of the forty foot as well.

Lads, some of those signs have been there for about 20 years, why you getting offended now???

Rule of thumb is fish it after dark when the swimmers are gone. I've fished it a few times during the day as a teenager and the oul lads are mostly ok, providing they use togs of course, seriously disturbing

This was a particularly mean-spirited move when all FOI requests turned up not one piece of public concern about the issue. Remember it when those councillors - and their parties - come banging on your door looking for votes in a few months time (Local and EU elections).

Here's the rest of the sign (I couldn't get it all in).

Note- The sign at Windsor Terrace / bug rock has been turned around to point people in the direction of the Forty Foot to fish which hardly helps...

That is a good little mark. Had some monster wrasse and pollock there.
Its still accessible by the way although a little tricky ;)
Had a run in with the owner and refused to move. Told her to call the cops cos as far as I was concerned, I wasn't trespassing. They never showed up. Draw your own conclusions.

as alby says fish it at night, who'd want to anyway, during the day as its not as prodctive unless you like small wrasse and pollock. that first sign has been there since i can remember and there is one also located at hawk cliffs also. grew up around there and learnt to fish there so if anyone should be annoyed it should be the locals, strangely enough im not.let them have there swimming place, old naked men shriveled up like prunes isnt to my liking anywho, the better marks are located way down to the right too

A DLR CoCo councillor just told me that the bye-laws in question (Prohibition on fishing at Forty Foot, and between lifeguard flags at Seapoint and Killiney beach, in fact, have NOT been passed).

It'll be an interesting FOI response to see how much public money was spent on signage that has no legal backing at all...

I'm following up.
