Maybe more vessels are showing up in range since EI6IZ installed an AIS receiver in Westport.

he has great coverage west of mayo but i don't think he is picking up that far out
http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/det ... tions/1585i had a look at some of the boats but the ais receiver station is not showing up on them,it might be from satellite,i think a few ships have a ais receiver on board that rebroadcast back to shore or via satellite

also some of the boats had no ais on board but have to have them fitted by 2015

But as you say, not much use to us if they're over the radio horizon - there could be twice as many boats out there and we wouldnt know...

I presume they are scooping up shoals of Blue Whiting.

That's just the inshore action. Have a look further out west next week.

The russians and faraoise etc are fishing blue whiting in international waters. Inside the 200 mile limit is the European fleets fishing blue whiting.

Attached is an up to date listing of the registration of Irish fishing boats
It works in Excel so it is easy to find things

It never stopped. I check most days to see what's off Belmullet and around Donegal Bay, and a clutch of boats, mostly Spanish, seem to be living out there.

Jeepers Christ - I know I don't know what half of those boats are fishing for and for how long each time but man those pictures look scary. It's actually quite surreal and frightening to see such high numbers of boats littered around the cost of Ireland!
