BUT I can see both sides of an argument here, Lets say that in the old days anglers sold their catch to mongers, chippers and shops, that creates less need for trawlers because local fisher men are supplying the fish. But its not the old days and the trawlers are already draining the sea of fish so it stands to reason that anglers selling their catch is just adding to a growing problem.

Totally agree with the above
But I dont think its as clear cut as sport versus comercial.

First and foremost I havn't ever sold any of my catch so lets be clear about that.
But.......the club that im a member fishes deep water wrecks for the first few trips of the year.
Pretty much all fish caught are __ by the time they reach the surface. So by the end of the day we end up with probably around 3 or 4 boxes of Pollock, Ling and Coalies. Most of us would take a few for the table, and the rest get handed out to whatever people have gathered on the pier on our return.
I don’t know the selling value of the various species of fish, if the club could sell a few boxes of fish the money could be used constructively towards subsidizing the cost for Juniors, because at the minute the fact of the matter is that charters are so expensive that with the limit of 10 to 12 people onboard, you don’t want too many juniors as it just puts the cost up for adults, but juniors are the future of the sport.
Or, the money could be used to go towards a prize fund for the clubs annual summer festival. The bigger the prize fund, the bigger the pool of enteries. As it’s a two day festival, local businesses such as Pubs, B&B’s, shops will all benefit from the increased tourism.

I know it opens up other issues in terms of exploiting the position, but if the club could legally sell say 10 boxes a year, I genuinely think it would have more positive effects than negative.

BTW this is my my own personal opinion, not that of the club's that I fish with

There yea go, a great Idea and also making use of waste... All deep sea angling trips end with a few box's of unwanted fish that died from the benz, if you could find a way to grow funds for a youth group then where is the harm?

The boat trips I have gone on we left a few box's of pollock, coalies, macks, and other types of fish that the skipper swaps with lobster men, crabbers and friends for other stuff....

1. I agree whole heartedly with the OP, I see where there is a problem with being asked to sell your catch. Anyone sea angling for profit in this way should have their rods snapped and their arses kicked.

2. The Blatant disregard some seem to have regarding species other than Bass is absolutely disgusting at times, we don't live in the good old days. We live in times where FNs are clearing out our harbours and beaches and foreign supertrawlers are raping our deep seas.

Angling as a sport can't be that important to some people judging by some of the views expressed on this site. If it's not for personal use, it should go back, if you practice otherwise, your no better than those b*st*rds who have had a field day destroying our fisheries for the past 4 decades.

This is something i agree with..... If i had said in my first post the shopkeeper asked me to catch as many Bass as i could so that he could sell them the outcome of this thread would have been very different...... Why is is ok to sell Cod and Pollack etc without worry but the suggestion of selling Bass would result in complete meltdown and abuse towards me for suggesting such a thing......? And yes, i know there is ban on commercially selling Bass, but the 'chat' i had with the aforementioned shopkeeper was nothing would go through the books....... So, if i wanted to to sell him Bass it would be a simple case of me turning up to his shop, saying heres the bass you asked for, thanks for the money....

But it's ok for a guide to charge a foreigner visitor a couple hundred euro to catch a fish that with 10 mins research online he could catch for nothing!!

Can we assume that nobody actually eats fish either? From the chipper or supermarket?

So we are against the trawlers, fair enough, and also against rod caught fish which is surely a better alternative to trawlers?

Where do I buy my fish tree from so?

Is there any wonder the site is struggling to retain posters with useful and informative content with this nonsense flying about!

How can these 2 examples even be compared? I would very happily pay someone a couple of hundred euro to show me how to catch a fish in an area ive never fished before... Everytime ive attempted to lure fish for bass its ended in tears for me, im fairly sure ive spent at least a hundred euro in lures which are now lost in the Irish Sea somewhere!!!!

As for the 'can we assume that nobody actually eats fish either?' comment, well thats just silly, as long as the demand is there for fish the trawlers will still be there to fill that demand, as much as anyone dislikes the idea thats the reality!

Actually Drew, i think that commercial fishing using rod and line is the best form of commercial fishing we as anglers could hope for.

Trawlers scoop up everything in their path and no matter what size of mesh the nets use, one the holes are blocked up with bigger fish then ALL fish are taken, including many juvenile fish and unwanted species.

While obviously many anglers don't want commercial fishing to happen at all, the reality is that it will happen, and it needs to be sustainable. Commercial fishing with rod and line means any unwanted or undersize fish can be put back with a much higher chance of survival. This almost eliminates the by catch that go back into the sea dead.

You claim because i have this view that angling as a sport isn't important to me? In actual fact i have this view because i love angling and i want it to be around for as long as possible. It will disappear fast if unsustainable commercial fishing continues.

So in response to the OP, i do not see a problem with someone asking you to sell your catch, just as i see no problem with you refusing.

Alex
