RockHunter wrote:Looks like Cork Harbour will be fairly devoid of mullet next year and if Robs 10% estimate for Bass in amongst that is anyway near correct there wont be too many Bass left either. If you apply the same calculation for Bass that would be about 11,600 Bass!!!!
I will not be expecting to catch any Bass in East Cork next year. :x :x :x

Its a fairly grim statistic alright. Looks the spring will be very telling down this way. My lure gear might end up in the for sale section this time next year.

Unfortunately there is no law against netting mullet.
They only break the law if they retain the bass, if thousands of dead bass are discarded then they are abiding by the law.
And they probably sleep well too !!!!!

Discarded.... right....
Easy to hide a few hundred boxes of bass amongst 3500 boxes of mullet!

Straight to france I reckon....

More than likely you are right.

I would doubt the fisherman retained bass. If anything they were probably not even sorted as the fish would be sent for processing into fish meal. They might be tankered or boxed in those ton boxes - So I guess.

I'm open to correction here but I don't think there is anything stopping them landing and selling Irish caught bass in France or The UK. Its hard remind myself of these incidents when the fishing of poor.

These particular fish were landed and boxed on irish soil ,so if any bass landed then the law has been broken, you are right on unloading elsewhere though, but why go to these extremes when unloading of bass on irish shores continues to go unpunished in the majority of cases.Makes me sick hearing these reports no wonder fishing has taken such a nose dive ,pure total and utter greed.

From my Facebook page:
The Rachel Jay is one of the boats involved (the other is the Dillon Owen)
I assume that the reply is from John Walsh (the Skipper).

Rachel Jay ยท
1/the most of the fish were sent to France !
2 / they were caught where normally there is herring
3/ do ye honestly think that we would shot back a second time on something we caught by accident !
It's a freak tow
Apparently in two hauls my eye???
It's on AIS for all to see that we had one tow

And Jim clohessy it's no problem to call me and find out the FACTS before spreading bullshit propaganda we have enough problems with bad press .
The most of the fish went for human consumption !
We landed in bins with SFPOs .
We are not happy about this and would have avoided it had we known it was mullet !
THESE ARE THE FACTS !
we manage our Celtic sea herring fishery ourselves and have the healthiest stock in Europe , it's MSC accredited and have a closed area north of 52 degrees with only the smaller vessels have access!
We are here for the long haul and conservation is a must for all !
Regarding the mullet all I can say it was a mistake!
How many times is a bass hooked in the closed season to anglers ?
Regards

So there you have it.

1) The whole thing is a disgrace...
2) in a wider sense, the whole industry is a joke if so much mature fish can be wiped out by accident.........
I'm really at a loss...

How many other fishing boats have gone out there to catch some "herring" and earn a few french euro for xmas!!

I'd love to see if he answers you about how many bass were caught.....

Feckin hell... he admits to a bass bycatch and eating them and giving them away....

The
Couple bass we picked out of them We had for out tea tonight they made a nice change from herring !
By our bizarre irish law I'm not allowed even to have them aboard , but they are a nice feed .
I do t see why we should dump them when a friend or two should benefit !
Look the law is the law I don't agree but that's the way !
Our herring season on the south coast is 6 weeks ,
If ye want a proper campaign lobby against the Dutch super trawlers that work on our west coast ALL year long ,(high grading) the destruction that is happening here is sinful!
That's where the damage is done not here in six weeks ! Hands up about the mullet !
It no different to digging for a carrot and getting a parsnip the top looks just the same !
Regards
