Re: Are we seeing the light - is this an opportunity?

I would go for: prohibiting commercial activities (commercial fishing and dredging) as far as possible from the shore (think I heard some like 6 miles would be great), setting minimum sizes for all fish species, of course more fisheries officers to control this, artificial reefs and marine reserves ... the list could be far longer but these are the first things that come to my mind ...

And of course figures are important, if they could understand that more quality fishing there will be, the more anglers will spent money in fishing (resident and tourists) and more money will be injected in local economies ect ...

Colm,
my apologies if I have upset anybody. I am in no way suggesting JimH is in any way involved or responsible for any of the information contained in the "Our Oceam Wealth" documents. When I commented on "his" economic figures, all I meant was the figure he had posted. My critisims of the Ocean Wealth documents and the work done by NUI galway were merely posted to support Jim's well known point of view on this forum. If it was construed in any other way then it should not have been as it was never intended to.
The most important thing now is to take advntage of this opportunity as it is unlikely to come again and I am gratefull to JimH for highlighting it.

Dunno. Possibly. Have to ask & clear it with Site Admin first.

More to the point - what exactly is the petition going to ask for? Specifically, point by point? Anybody care to make a stab at it? Or anyone want to start the ball rolling on a brainstorming session?

To set up a petition is easy , but we need to format it so in Twinkles other post about what we want please please reply with your ideas, theres no point doing this halfcocked we want a document we can all be proud to stand by. that will save our fish stocks

I have no problem with setting up the petition, just we need to word it very strongly, as to produce proper meaningful results this would need to presented to the Minister for Marine, both in Ireland and EU, we could get the backing of marine colleges and FishFight camp

A good article and he seems to know what he's talking about. If someone knows him he might be a good one to have on board ( no pun intended  )
