It'll be an interesting FOI response to see how much public money was spent on signage that has no legal backing at all...
I'm following up.
Fascinating. See what we're up against here? They tried to bring in a ban, we've (ie the Sea anglering community) managed to delay it, and still they act as if we didn't exist.
That mark should be fished in defiance of that sign. They should be made remove that sign. And if they don't, that sign should be removed by anglers and handed back to them in their council offices. With a lot of publicity.
They're just trying it on for a back-door ban on angling, that they couldn't get in the front door.

And I was wondering why I couldn't find a record of the vote and had to write to the Cathaoirleach about it earlier today ....

That is a good little mark. Had some monster wrasse and pollock there
.
Its still accessible by the way although a little tricky

Had a run in with the owner and refused to move. Told her to call the cops cos as far as I was concerned, I wasn't trespassing. They never showed up. Draw your own conclusions.
feesh
yeah senor is a smashin mark......seen a conger swimming over a ledge there once at high tide at least 50lb. got some good pollack there spinning and a few red cod to bait

women were once not alowed to swim in the fortyfoot, its seems to me that the place is for dirty oul men who like prance around in their nip,i cant think of anything worse than an old pair of blue balls to put me off my fishing

Lads, don't mean to sound narky or anything, but like come on, let common sense prevail here, it's a bathing area and is used by dozens of swimmers literally 365 days a year, and has been for the last 100 years.
You can't stroll down with your rods etc and start launching leads out all over the place, these signs have nothing to do with any proposed angling ban, they are for the safety of the swimmers in the 40 foot, no dog sh!t, no leads in the face, hooks lying around etc.
That being said no one will stop you fishing at night, and you can access the best & safest marks when you have it to yourself. Not a bad mark, a little hit and miss, try it for yourself

i disagree. this isn't about the issue of responsible angling, which everyone accepts, but that location should be shared by everyone. it's not an exclusive private swimming location but a public place.
this argument about fishing at night isn't inclusive of kids, seniors, and anyone else who wants to/has to fish during the day.
what's happening here is the pandering of DLR CoCo to one small section of bathers and preventing fishing by sleight of hand.

im happy to let them swim during the day, like alby said they've been there for a long time and sure who cares if they want a small section of land to swim safely

We've already seen, and are fighting tooth and nail, the logical conclusion of that appeasement - angling being confined to certain places/times etc that have no bearing on our sport's reality.
It's the thin edge of the wedge. Fight and oppose them on the inches, or risk losing the miles.
Fri Jan 16, 2009 2:53 pm
if a load of anglers just turned up down the 40ft and start throwing weights around during the day while people where swimming it would have a pretty negative effect with the public. as the lads said swimmers have been there for yonks and they use it more than anglers better to compromise fish the spot at night or fish the areas with no swimmers then to risk getting negative publicity.
Fri Jan 16, 2009 3:12 pm
With those "No fishing" signs up, you are not allowed to fish there at any time.
No fishing. Ever. Don't do it. You'll be breaking a law that doesn't actually exist. Which is why I say remove those signs and return them to the CoCo, or make the CoCo remove them.
Stand up for yourselves lads, don't be pushed about or bullied by nameless faceless officials.

im with you on this one tanglerat - in galway they had the no fishing signs at the diving board and then proposed other areas - i was asked to stop fishing once at another venue
thin end of the wedge and all that
i kicked up a fuss and got apologies from 2 different officials - they are wrong and they know it - just chancing their arm

I've got to agree with most of the people here if they do it in one place and get away with it then it will be only a matter of time before it starts to spread. It starts with the 40ft with the argument of swimmers or bystanders and it will spread to other locations such as Bray pier & head, Dunlaoghaire pier, Poolbeg, Sandycove, Sandymount, Brittas bay, Greystones beach & rocks, Wicklow piers and so on.
Once they can make a case on any grounds i.e. safety, swimmers etc and sight any sort of precedent they will continue to other venues.
South, West & North coast you know your own venues which may be targeted.
Fri Jan 16, 2009 4:59 pm
corbyeire and phil I agree with you one hundred per cent! its up to us all to watch out for our own areas, and when the councils break the law erecting these signs, make sure they are removed !!I think its time we all got proactive and downright militant!!

Yep I do. I was the thicko in an orange Temple Street T-shirt on Christmas morning. Even got my belly on the news.
To be fair we would not lob lines in where people are swimming and I'm sure most of us just pack up when we find ourselves fishing a swimming spot. However I can see where people are coming from. Better to use common sense and move off then to be told we have to. And what use is a fishing ban when there are times people are not even swimming?
Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:44 pm
reminds me of turkey, when i was there a couple of years back every wee spot was teaming with fish, they were very tame and came up to feed out of your hands, just when you would've thought of going there to fish you realise that there is a no fishing sign.

hi the way to go with this is direct action the local elections are stort time away clubs and tackle shops should have petitions should set up and all the local county counclers should be informed and comprise should be reached with swimmers and anglers. The same thing happend to a mark i fished all the time in north dublin very simmler mark to the fortyfoot. Its called highrock we did this back 15 years ago and it was around elections. The comprise we got was angler could fish from jan feb march, april, closed for fishing may june july aug set, open for fishing nov oct dec jan feb ect.I no its not open fishing but it was better then no fishing at all.we had a lot off agro be for this was sorted out with gards being call down and all the hassel that goes with it.the way it work is anglers have to give way to swimmers in cloesed time and the other way round when it open for swimmers.if people want i can get phone no for conclers in area and if posable set up online petishion.
