Foul hooking fish for sport and food....

ok let me be clear on this i think that snatching is wrong not sporting or fair on the fish but imo is just another form of angling.

by definition angleing is useing rod and hook (angle) to catch fish and ill say it again casting a hook into a shoal of fish hopeing to catch one is angleing so yes people who fish by this means are anglers not very good anglers in fact they be a bit sht but they are anglers none the less.

What??? How often do you go out fishing with a bare hook??
Is angling not about trying to fool the fish into thinking your lure is a real baitfish,or attracting them with various baits?
Why do we bother spending hours tying rigs with beads and other bling if its not to attract the fish

im just giving my opinion and in my opinion its wrong BUT if anyone does it im not going to look down on them for it or start calling them stupid names because i think its wrong. i think people in glass houses should not throw stones

What??? How often do you go out fishing with a bare hook?? as i said already im personaly not into that crack but if anyone wants to give it a lash more power to them ill not be the fella getting mad about it and wanting to ban commercial fishing on another species of fish because anglers spend alot of time and money chaseing them to hook them fight them land them and then release them.

Mate an angler can have a very expensive rod super pricey braid and a top notch lure and still catch 20 bass... its angling, and its wrong... if you missed that point... jez

Used to do it as a kid all the time with mackeral... bare hook did the job when you had nothing else...

Knock your self out with these definations... angling is catching fish with a hook... its not necessarily with a rod and line... beyond that everything is angling with a hook....

Not enough snatchers in their market to justify that content... you see a snatcher I imagine just used a bog standard hook, cheap line and an even cheaper rod... chances are they do not spend a whole lot month to month like other types of anglers and as they do not spend money they probably do not buy angling mags... so why would the mags write about the subject, its like them writing about skiing or another that would not interest their readership...

Incidently I have recently seen a fishing rod that can be-used whilst on scuba dive!!!!!!!!

Its not wrong to catch 20 bass!! Its wrong to KEEP 20 bass(and illegal)

A Bass angler spends a fortune on plugs etc,will he get so frustrated at not catching that he will try a gill net just because he read it on here!!?

Give the anglers on here some credit

keep posting about illegal gill netters if you like but it would probably be better to report them to the fishery officer instead

most of the anglers on here would think snatching a mullet with hooks is wrong and would not try it but the NOT anglers can read too and i can see a lot more of them trying to snatch a mullet after reading all about it hear

there is a big difference between A Bass angler that spends a fortune on plugs and a gill netter,A Bass angler that spends a fortune on plugs is fishing for sport or the 2 bass he can take for the plate where as a gill netter is trying to make as much profit as he can

snatching a mullet is not a illegal method,what laws are against it?

A bloke who comes in to my work told me his son bought a gill net and was netting salmon and sea trout over double figures at one of my favourite mullet marks.While targeting these he is getting very large mullet(up to 13lb) as bycatch

In my eyes snatching is equally as bad as what this bloke is getting up to...

This is being seriously hypocritical. A few posts ago you called Cathal selfish because he gets enjoyment out of fishing(or as you made it seem, hurting other life for fun). Why does the end justify the means for you and not for him? Neither of you REALLY need what you are getting, and fish are being er..... 'hurt' for it. You are 'hurting' fish for your own enjoyment and if you think otherwise your just lying to yourself to make you feel better about it.

There should be some? That sounds like pure speculation to me. Has anyone ever found even a shred of proof that fish feel emotion?

I am fishing for food, the fish I catch I eat... I don't think that is hypocritical at all, its nature... if I did feel like that I would have to become a vegan and not eat any fish or other meat products...
To live I need protein, and hunting and consuming what you hunt is a natural and instinctive behaviour for most animals... humans are not excluded from this...
However its only in the human species that you find spending time hunting down another species for enojyment without any thought of consuming it (I'm talking 100% c+r). I have to say this is not natural behaviour in 'nature'.

Not at all looking down on it, just pointing out its not 'natural' by the actual defination...

I think i'll just have to accept that we have very different points of view! I also happen to think a number of other things, but i'll keep them to myself.

However, i do need to point out one thing. Have you ever watched a cat play with a mouse? I have three cats, and more often than not they catch and kill small mammals for the fun of it. They aren't hungry, they are doing it purely for they joy it gives them. You may say that its somehow different as they are domestic animals, but it doesn't stop them doing it does it? So i just had to point out that you were wrong in suggesting it is only the human species that cause other animals pain for fun.

And i had a look through all those links you put up. All very interesting, but it does seem there is only one study out there that proves(as much as one can prove) that fish do feel pain. The others all seem to suggest that fish MAY be able to feel emotion. As far as i can see, no one has got much further that and until they do i am not going to pay it much attention to be honest.
