SAI Reef Meet,Carrigaholt,19/4/9 http://www.chillwithbill.com

This thread is to collect the names of Club Members for a reef fishing
boat trip the day after the Glasilaun, Co Galway shore competition.
The boat booked is the Clare Dragoon. I'm starting the thread early so
I can book a second boat if needed. Detailed reports of the fishing
on this boat are here

http://www.shannon-fishery-board.ie/gui ... n_2008.htm

The theory goes that fish in this area are too busy spawning in March
to feed and are so hungry after all the fishy slap and tickle they go
on a mad feeding binge in April. Whether that's true or not, I caught a
specimen ballan on peeler crab that time last year. Also any number of
2lb whiting can be picked up and a 3lb fish must be a possibility.
Pollack around 5 or 6 lb are usually present and are often taken on 4
or 5 inch red shads. All the other usual suspects will show up as
well.

Report from last year is at

Bill Ryan is a shore fishing guide from the area
http://www.chillwithbill.com/ and also

http://www.shannon-fishery-board.ie/gui ... n_2008.htm

Bill has 51 Irish Specimen Fish Awards, you might have seen him on
Wild Fishing with Henry Gilbey.

He has offered to sponsor a specimen competition on the day with a
prize of a guided shore trip. For the specimen competition the points
for each fish are a percentage of the speciment weight, so an 11 pound
pollack would be 11x100/12=92 points, the best three species to count,
one fish per species.

I fixed the link above now so there is a detailed report of the species which come up.
I'm not sure what type of information you might need? In terms of tackle for
the reef fishing, you are talking about deep water often over 200 feet plus
tide, wind and swell as well, so 30lb braid on a multiplier with a 6:1 retrieve is
typically used. Leads around 10oz or 12oz are suitable and a 12/20lb class rod.
You need to use strongly constructed rigs as it would not be unusual to end up
attached to two or three strong fish. If you use certain brands the fish will send it
back up to you looking like a tree that's been through one of those logging machines :-)

That's grand jw, big thanks for fixing the links, I was looking for more info about the boat/skipper, have enough details now to be happy. 8)
Ready to go when you are ready and I'm really looking forward to the trip, hope you have room for a mate too, he's English  but a nice chap nevertheless  and a seasoned sea angler o top of that.
If you use certain brands..

Planning to fish with a FF Ultra Roller 20/50lb 7.0' boat rod and an Ambassdeur 7000C4 LD, spooled with Dyneema 80lb braid and/or a Bison BN602B-30 30/50lb 6.0' with an Ambassadeur 7000B High Speed, Dyneema 60lb, they should be up to the job.
I also have plenty of good quality inshore boat rigs in my collection, but always grateful for hands on advice.

Meeting time on pier is 830 to load the gear and depart at 900

by far the most important bait is fresh mackerel which should be present,
but they can be awkward beggars when they decide they want to be, so might be
worth bringing a few frozen

forecast looks ok at the minute
