Boat MA Comp 3, Carrigaholt, May 26th, sponsored by crabrock

i'm starting this thread to get the names in plenty of time for the third boat comp. Please post here if you are definately coming.

The boat is the clare dragoon http://www.fishandstay.com/boat/

The departure time will be 9:00am, so meeting time will be 8:30 am ( and this skipper does not show up late and then start refuelling the boat!)

Also, anyone staying for a bit of shore fishing Sunday 27th? Any suggestions?

I guess the fishing, weather permitting, will be general reef fishing 3 or 4 miles off in the areas shown below. The depths can be up to 80m, so braid is essential. The swell here is significantly bigger than the south or east coat so if its windy there will be bottom fishing in the shannon estuary.

The mackerel have been in since early april, so everything is a bit ahead this year. Boat reports are posted at http://www.shannon-fishery-board.ie/gui ... n_2007.htm

This is why JW is trying to get a handle on numbers so if needs be another charter can be booked Paul. First 8 guaranteed places after that it will depend on another boat being booked.

forgot to mention accommodation. If staying, should definately stay with Luke as the charter business is only viable combined with the accommodation which is excellent.

forgot to mention directions, although it's hard to get lost in carrigaholt, which is a cross roads. Don't go to the pier across from the pub, drive straight through the village, up a hill past a church on the right and take the first left down to the main pier and the car park which is beside the castle.

we will be leaving at low water on a neap tide which is good. The fish down here are fairly straightforward fellows, who just eat anything that looks like food and make baby fish. Not into astrology, can't even see the moon from down there, dont own compasses and couldn't give a fiddlers what way the wind is blowing. that's what i think anyway!

Should be done for all the comps (for those of us without GPS units Steve  )

BTW the Long Dock is good for a bite afterwards, so I suggest we meet up there to sort out results, present prizes, eat food etc.

Dave,

It depends on the weather. Assuming its reasonable then we will head out to the marks about 4 miles out from loop head and drift. These are mainly reefs so worth attaching leads with rotten bottom of some type. In rough order of what might come up...pollack, wrasse, coalfish, gurnards, whiting, some good cod this year apparently, ling. The boat got two specimen john dory last year. Also Haddock and you might even pick up an octopus!

If its windy we might drift over similar ground closer in sheltered by the peninsula. If its like gale force or above we could head up the estuary and anchor over sand for ray, bull huss and doggies. There are also loads of small flats including plaice there.

The final thing we might do is anchor up close to some rocky areas near kilbaha and try for conger, big bull huss etc.
