Yeah in the summer I think they can be got all along that area, unsure what's there in the winter other than straps.

Poulnasherry is always worth a try I have seen so good huss from there, I would say strap three sandeel together but the best huss I have seen from the was caught by my mate Joe on an inch section of sandeel on a three hook flapper twenty feet out.
Cappagh Pier was good at one time as well.
There are a few North Clare marks you can find them on in the winter months

Cheers, good to know they dont migrate in the winter. I Probably should of just asked that first.
No dropnet yet so I will have to skip on Cappagh.
I will let ye know the result.

I'm sure they do quieten in winter around the shannon. They can be got but generally you need to be fishing foul ground to get them consistently. One mark in particular in clare jumps out but it is kelp beds fising. Valentia is far better for them.
Give it a few more weeks and you can go to Kenmare for Spurdogs for variety.

Besides the drive the thing with valentia, the people chatting to you and you miss the bites

No cod left in Cork Donal? Lol. Had the crimps out myself last night. Was told by an old fisherman man on the pontoon to head abit west of the lighthouse. Might be worth a go if the pontoon is slow. I was always to lazy to go over.

Man that looks good.Shambles of a day from the start. Was very late leaving so stopped at inish Murray peir for the flood, 4 rods with big baits, nothing.Did loose plenty of leads and rigs to top the day off. Just one of those days. On the plus side weather was nice for the time of year.

Yeah seen many landed here in the summer. Reeled in 3 different traces, must be well fished all year round.

When you are getting a much cod as I am

you have to come up with a lot of different recipes. They were the long strips that can be pulled off the shoulder of the fish. It was deep fried in a batter made from flour and ice cold water.

Here is a group shot of some of them
awful small cod:lol:

Looking through my notebook I've had Huss from the Shannon (both Clare & Limerick side) in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb and March. But I've never had a good one through the winter months, they have all been mostly small.
I'm of the firm belief that the vast majority of species in the Shannon remain the whole year round, but maybe not in the numbers that can be found from the spring onwards. Or else they are in much deeper water and out of casting range.
Ive taken them from both the locations you mention in January both during the day and night
