Fishing in Annestown, Co, Waterford

Sat Apr 09, 2016 9:30 pm

I have recently moved to Annestown, Co Waterford and there is a lagoon pool behind the beach where the stream runs in. I saw some large activity of surface feeding going on. There was some large fish turned on the surface near the banks. Just wondering does anybody know what species of fish are there this time of year? Thanks all

They are mullet. There is a small stream on the right hand side of the beach that they come up on a high tide.

If they are mullet they will not be there for long as now the red trawler man will know that the are there and like the rest of the south coast especially the cork coast he will clean it out of them.If posting to tell anyone about any mullet been seen anywhere please send a PM as a reply this way the red trawler man will not get the free information.

Fishing for mullet is not illegal and he is trying to make a living. Now that is what they will tell you and they are right.
Until the laws are changed there is nothing we can do about it.
Burning trawlers will only see you in jail and the boat owner claiming off of his insurance to buy a better boat for doing the job again.

Now there are laws about the catching bass and these can be used to slow down these boatmen. While they fish for mullet they will often catch bass, both species feed in the same inshore waters. Get the number of the boat, useful link below, and report it to you local fisheries officer.
Please do not waste their time with "I saw a boat yesterday". If you see a net been put out in an area where mullet and bass frequent report it then, along with as much details as possible including the registration number of the vessel
While IFI can not do any thing about the mullet they can prosecute if there are bass in the net or on board the boat.

Hi Lads, I feel now I should have said nothing. I have moved to the area and I am a major trout, fly fisher man who wants to get into sea fishing. I am a catch and release man only. I hope I did not cause a storm I thought there were mullet never caught them in my life thought it would be something different.......

Sure if you didn't ask you wouldn't know.
Don't think you would fit a row boat never mind a trawler in that lagoon.
Often thought about trying a fly for them down there.
And if you walk a bit up the river you will get brownies in the river there

Why do ye feel like that - I was joking :D

Anyway - Breadfly will get you a mullet - use a salmon rod - 7/8 8/9 close to rocks if there is any about - you will see them shooting up and down by them at any time of the day - but like all the rest get some local knowledge of when they are around and go after them.

The are a better fight than salmon apparently - but I have never caught so cant compare but I have heard from good sources they are an amazing fight on a fly rod. Use a very good leader!

Sorry for hijacking the post but would mullet be in at this time of the year? Isn't it a bit early?
