Mono or Braid 8lb

Mon Jan 30, 2012 6:04 pm

Hi lads,

Just got me son a Shimano Aernos Spinning reel for christmas and he told me he'd like to try it out on Saturday.
I looked at it and it says it can hold 120 yards of 10lb line 140 yards of 8lb line or 160 yards of 6lb.

So i was thinking of loading it with 10lb Braid and about 16lb Mono Leader.
Is this the right thing to do?
Any opinions would be great

if you are spinning just stick the 10 pound mono on and a good rubbing mono leader.its cheaper and the knots are easier and stronger to tie.bait fishing the braid gives better distances.if he is only getting into it stick with the mono.. :) :D

Don't stick to Mono :!:

What will you be fishing for :?:

For seatrout or smaller fish over cleanish ground 10lb to 15lb braid will do well. You can go lighter as you get more used to braid and how it handles. Use a 10lb - 15lb Flurocarbon leader, depending on the ground you are fishing over. Remember, 10lb braid is likely to be thinner that 4lb line. Learn the improved albright knot or slim beauty knot for joining the brain to mono leader. Use a 2 - 3 foot leader and keep it outside the guides for casting. Repeated wear on the knot from pinging the guides during the cast will casue it to fail.... normally mid cast resulting is the loss of an expensive lure.

For Bass step the braid upto 20lb or 30lb. If your new to Bass fishing and are fishing over some really rouch ground. The 30lb braid is still only going to be as thick as 10 or 12lb mono and will give you s slightly better chance of getting your lure back should you snag weed or a rock. Some of the newer braids are thinner again. Same setup foe the leader just go upto 25lb fluro. Try get a good fluro here as the diameter will be reduced. Tubertini Gorilla is the business.

Move to braid... Mono is for the dark ages and some very specific situations.

Tight Lines,

Kev

Just re-read and noticed this is for you son....

Maybe Mono would be best until he get the hang of it, then move him to braid :D

Okay then,

Thanks Mac

He has the Shimano Aernos 4000 and it says it could hold 3lb 4lb or 5lb line.
Does this mean i will not be able to fill it with 10lb?

Thanks

you can but wont fit alot on such a small spool but if its for a young lad he isnt gonna be casting 120 yards with a spinner anyway, go for a good quality mono and you wont have any problems
