Hi Guys
I am new to the website and have found some very interesting topics on here so far !
I am just getting back into fishing, used to do a bit when I was a kid down in wicklow.
Im am from the dun laoghaire of dublin and have popped down to the pier and bullock harbour and colliemoore harbour.
In the last 5 times i have been out I have caught absolutely nothing.
I was using mackerel and worms as bait in dun laoghaire and tried prawns in colliemoore and got nothing.
Alot of the websites seem to suggest using crab as bait or worms.
Just wondering is it too early in the year to catch anything in colliemoore (off the pier) and if not, what is the best bait to be using.
Just getting frustrated going out and not even getting a bite and thinking i am doing something wrong.
I look forward to your replies
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Re: Pier Fishing on the Southside of Dublin
Hi Ron good baits for pier fishing are lug&rag worm but crab can be good but it's a little more specialist. I'm no expert but I find that the likes of pier fishing doesn't really get going until the summer months when you have the summer species coming in such as wrasse, mackerel etc. also tides are very important when shore fishing as many fish seem to feed alot more when the tide is in as to when out. I find the irish times tide tables very useful for this just google Irish tide times and u shud find it!so your probably not doing a hole lot wrong,I'd suggest to wait a few months and give it ago then but if you can't wait I'd suggest trying some other methods such as beach/spinning for bass etc hope this helps!

Hi Cabinteely,
what way are you fishing from the pier is it floating or ledgering?
I think it will be a bit early for dun laoighre yet but in Summer fishing a float with rag will get you a few species of wrasse, pollock, whiting and mac inside the pier, Ledgering can be done on the seaward side and your in with a shot of whiting, pouting, small codling, doggies, scorpion fish etc. Rag and Mac is as good as anything here! There used to be decent flounder and Plaice caught inside the pier to ledgered baits yeeeeeeeeaaaars ago but seems to be dead enough now
With Bullock, fishing inside the pier is pretty dead but you are in with a chance of whiting and codling to ledgered crab/lug baits in winter...have only fished it in winter myself and not for a few years but i'm sure in summer there's the chance of wrasse, pollock and red cod from here. It's always full of mac bashers in summer though!

Or maybe head out as far as Greystones, was out there last week, caught some doggies, whiting, and rockling. You've got pier, Rock, and Beach all in one area, not too far from Dublin.

Re: Pier Fishing on the Southside of Dublin
Fishing from Dun Laoghaire, especially at this time of year, can require a LOT of patience (and a lot of gear lost to snags!).
It took me at least 6/7 different trips in order to land my first fish when i started out 2 years ago, but it was certainly worth it in the end.
If possible, maybe try to take a trip further down the coast. And of course keep reading the tips posted on here, it really is an invaluable resource
Good luck!
