Once ya go black ya never go back.... (Lugworm)

#1 Post by Jayball10 »

Was out fishing last night and was very happy with the results. Between 2 of us we had about 20 fish. Dabs, Flounder, Dogs, Whiting, Coalies and Codling. The thing is most fish fell to the black lug or frozen lug we bought from the tackle shop to try out. Tried Peelers and Razor to no affect. Sandeels, Rag and Mack took some but the killer was the lug. Question really is, what exactly are these frozen lug? Are they the normal ones we get under the coils in the sand at low water or they a different species all together? If so will the normal ones work as well or do they have to be "Black". Where can these fellas be found? I know ya have to take the insides out but not sure how to do it or what to do after that.

I guess it depends on where you are fishing etc etc, I found black lug to be an excellent bait but I also dig my own. I can't really say what THEE best bait is.............it tends to vary a bit between the seasons conditions etc. I've been out at times and my lug and squid etc was passed over but a simple strip of mackerel did the trick, funny old world is angling, you never really know.

They're a totally different species. They do still leave casts, but they're different casts. You'll notice that normal lug leave a messy cast, no pattern or anything to it, and live in a U shaped burrow. Blacks leave a nicely coiled cast and live in a J shaped burrow. You'll normally find them towards the bottom of the beach, often only on bigger tides.

Most people use pumps to get blacks, but some experienced guys dig them. Be aware that they're often quite a bit deeper than normal lug so it can be hard to dig them unless you know what you're doing.

Once you've dug them squeeze the head and they'll kind of explode. Gut them and wrap in newspaper then bung in the freezer if you must. Personally I'm not a fan of frozen and would rather buy fresh, but many people find frozen just as good.
