problems gathering razor in sligo

hi folks

maybe some of you guys can help

I took advantage of the recent tides to go looking for some razor, with a view to getting both bait and some fodder for the frying pan.

at the spot I think i found razor, but only in areas that were still slightly undrwater, when i stamped i could see a small spout or disturbance, but as it was slightly underwater the hole seemd to fill in really quick, i tried salt, but it didnt work, even with ones i i marked and left for ages, i think maybe the hole was filling with sand and blocking the salt, trying to dig with a fork didnt work as the hole was filling in quicker than I could dig.

was this simply a matter of the tide not being low enough? do the razor need to be totally on dry sand for the salt to work?

any help appreciated

o aye an if anybody knows any good spots for then round sligo/mayo that would be cool to

if under water you usually see their mark that is around the size of 20c to 50c coin a milky coloured sand different to the surrounding sand,on the dry sand its usually a keyhole shape hole,they usually spit as you trod near them,at this stage they have buried themselves deeper and hard to catch ,i use my right hand to dive down beside hole and stop them going deeper and then dig with left hand use both to wiggle them side to side as you pull upwards keep shell squeezed tight as they leave shell behind which is no good for them or us
,hard on the fingers especially when cold ,hope this helps

I use salt and it's rare it doesn't work. If they're in about 3 or 4 inches of water i'd try to get them out which is usually successful but any more than that and i wouldn't bother as the salt would have trouble reaching the clam to irritate them. On the dry sand, i walk heavily on the sand till i see a disturbance in the sand or a spurt of water and pour about a tea spoon of salt onto the disturbed area of sand. Some times this can be a hole, sometimes a dent or sometimes the sand is a slightly different colour than the surrounding area. I find the sand that the clam spits to the top is usually darker but that might just be where i pick them. Another way of doing it that would probly work better in the water is to use a weed sprayer filled with a salt solution. Hold the nozzle of the sprayer about a centimeter from the sand and spray down towards the clam.
