Derry gave me the TIP of the day...
More or less an invitation to fly over to shannon and do some fishing..
When i think of it its not a bad idea after all... flying to shannon is cheap. And it would be great to acctually meet some of the folk in here.
IF i come over it cant be untill june or july or later... But i need to know some things about shannon, cheap places to live, places to eat, what does it cost?
Any good tacklestores? if im coming over im planning to buy some things to bring with me home.

hey frogelberg, shannon really isn't much more than an airport with a small town attached to it, if you were to be staying locally you would be staying either in Limerick city, or Ennis in County Clare, but if you're coming simply for the fishing then try and find a place on the Clare or Kerry coast. the problem with staying by the coast in the summer is the cost of renting a house, all the towns are totally geared for tourists in the summer and rent can be throw the roof. i'm living in kilkee on the clare coast, and rent here in the summer can go over 400euro a week, but that's an extreme. i'm sure the lads on the south coast of the shannon in kerry might be able to suggest places in their neck of the woods....how long are you intending on staying? as for food, if push comes to shove you can always live out of chippers while you are here!
as for the fishing, it will be totally switched n in june/july with pollack/wrasse/bass/mullet and mackeral in and around kilkee. in the shannon estuary itself there's conger, bull huss, and ray. and on the kerry coast, there are some legendary bass marks.
the tackle shops aren't fantastic here, but you'll be able to get what ever gear you need, just don't be expecting bargains!.....if you need any more advice or that about the area, just pm me....anyway i'm sure the other local lads on the message board have tonnes of advice...

Frodo...
renting a house for 400 is a bit stiff for one person... but if i manage to pull, lets say 3 of my mates with me its not that bad, i can totally live on fish n' chips for a month if necessary.
regarding fish, it would be a major thing if I even caught a fish  but seriously, Conger is a dream and so is ray, its the odd thing one wants to catch when going on a trip like this and Conger and ray are nonexistent here in my waters. Wrasse, Bass and mullet are wanted as well but mullet does come to my waters as well.
The big bummer is the tackle shops.. i was hoping to do the bargains over there, but i think that any price you don't see as a bargain yourself is a major bargain compared to our Swedish stores, they are bloodsuckers all of them over here.
Thanks for the tips and ideas and i´ll keep looking for more info..

ya sorry bout mentioning the price, i wasn't trying to scare the bejesus out of you or anything. but i'm sure there are cheaper places around, i'm just basing these prices on my experiences on kilkee in the height of summer.....i'm pretty sure that charter boats run from kilrush which is on the clare side of the shannon estuary, matt hayes from total fishing did a few segments in his programmes based on the tope and conger in the estuary. i can ask around and get contact numbers for you if you are thinking of heading out for a days boat fishing, same goes with looking for accomodation, if you run into difficulties just give me a shout, and i can look up some local agencies and b&b's and that and send you on any details you might need......i'm relatively new to this sea angling scene so i'm not the best person to be giving details on fishing marks, baits tactis etc ,but as you know yourself there are loads of lads based around the estuary who are on the message board regularly

i do some shopping for tackle in Sweden because it a lot cheaper over there. Kerry side is cheap living along the Shannon as most of the tourists are down south Kerry where you will have to fish man its the Mecca. b B+B's are around 35 a night.
your can get a mobile home in ballybunion for about 150+ for a week sleep 4 comfi.

Hi Frodo
I'm coming over in October, with 9 other Welsh lads. You say that you live in Kilkee (not far from Kilrush), Can you tell me what Kilrush would be like as our base? What is the drive like from Shannon Airport?
Fri Apr 22, 2005 3:11 pm
kilrush is cool, it's about 40 minutes of a drive to shannon, and about an hour to limerick city......kilrush does get a lot of stick for having a rough reputation, but i work with a lot of guys who have lived in the area for years and they just recommend to mind your own business, you'll only get grief if you go looking for it! same as any other town or city in the world really. if i had the choice though i would try and stay in kilkee for the couple of days, the sceney is just nicer, and it's onlt ten minute out the road from kilrush.rent and that will have returned to normal prices come october so you should be ok on that front, and there's more pubs than houses in the place, great place to go on the beer! as i said already to frogelberg if you run into any difficulty trying to organise a house or that just give me a shout, and i can get you some contact numbers or that no worries.......maybe i should pack in college and open a fishing holiday agency in the west coast of clare!!!!

Hi frogelberg you might be better off renting a mobile home and you should find a reasonably priced house to rent someone should be able to cut you a deal if your staying that long the fishihg should be good around that time of year with most species being caught bar whiting.
I know plenty of good fishing places to catch fish in the Shannon and stay on the north shore as the Clare side is much better than the south side for fishing with much more options for different fishing.
From estuary fishing to rocks and great beaches too.
Before you come over ill send you my mobile no and put you on the right direction.

as things looks now i have to cancel my trip to Ireland, some friends from my forum wants me to join them on a fishing trip here in Sweden.
at the same time my spouse is bugging my about a trip to Greece or Crete, and that's not all, her sis' it getting married so of course my better half has to buy new outfits to herself and our daughter.
This ends with me being totally without money (again). Last year she was in Athens for a month and i didn't get any vacation at all, this year I was planning my first vacation in 10 years and swoosh she ripped that plans apart to.
WOMEN!! you cant live with them and its illegal to kill them....
ps. i now have more time for planning my trips, two trips in planning stages now...
1 a 300km hike across southern sweden.
2 a fishing trip to Ireland.
