As per my report, my last two trips to Kerry have been marred by the crappy sandeel I bought in Dublin. They were falling apart as soon as I tried to hook them, despite keeping them in cooler bags with ice packs etc.
After my August trip I swore I would not buy the sandeel in the shop that had provided them that time. So instead I bought them in town, and paid a fiver a packet (8 per pack) for sandeels in the 6-8 inch size. This may seem very expensive, but it's hard to come across sandeels in this size, so I was happy to pay the price. Until I used them that is. They were absolutely rubbish, ripping open at the slightest touch.
Can anyone reccomend a tackle shop that sells top quality frozen sandeel - preferably Ammo, although it can be hard to get these in a large enough size? I'm running out of tackle shops to buy them in! There is nothing worse than driving for 5 hours to find that the bait you paid good money for is useless, so I would appreciate any help.

Hi Steve,
Why not stop off in landers in Tralee on the way down which is an excellent shop. They sell ammo and are of good quality. A kerry brand to buy is KB baits which I'm told have excellent quality sand eel. I've used the KB mackerel and it really is top notch sometimes better than ammo. Ammo baits can sometimes be poor probably due to defrosting in transport. You can also get in contact with bob moss as he can sell you sand eel.
One other thing always check the vacum seal isn't broken on your sand eel and theres no blood in the packet

Steve,
The best spot to get frozen sandeel is from Bob Moss - He has a freezer full and is very cheap.

I recommend Kevins baits when thawed out they are solid baits as he catches both the mackerel and sandeel locally so the only have a short trip to his shed which in kitted out with a blast freezer and vacum packing machine.
He is also a great sea angling guide we fished with him a few years ago and caught a large cuckoo wrasse off culoo which he released, he reckons it was a record fish.
I also recommend Bob's baits which I can honestly say are the cheapest in Ireland his own razor fish are much better than the ammo variety.
Actually Bob's 12ft rod is a good rod for most types of sea angling especially the rays and huss it has a good casting action and great recovery.
