TELEGRAGH POLE RED ROCK

CAN ANY BODY GIVE ME A FEW TIPS ON FISHING HERE, BAITS TIDES RIGS SPECIES ETC ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPREICIATED.

telegraph pole- close in for good wrasse, otherwise lots of doggies. rare codling and pollack can show. red rock has more variety and better off putting the hours in there, although i have to admit to not having much experience of the place. i am sure some of the lads will help you out.

is the telegragh pole far up from the martello tower wheres the best place to bait fish around here mb3. and how do i cope with the weedy ground here .

it's a bit of a trek alright. i don't want to give the best access piont to this place publically. i am genuinely not being sneaky. you see the residents here have tried in the past to cut the access to anglers (and i pressume walkers). if you jion the memberlist i can send u a private message?

as for beating the rough ground, there are lots of tricks and everyone seems to have there own! generally if you can put a bait out 80 yards plus you will find reasonably clean ground. 15lb. mainline is fine. if in doubt use a rotten bottom and sea match aberdeens (or similar). these hooks will bend out of snags with light mainlines and still land you a good fish. i have lift codling to 2 1/2 pound up the rocks on these hooks. in saying that i have not found them good for doggies as they seem to come off on the strike or while reeling in and DON'T use them for bass at red rock! it is worth using a strong hook and loosing a few rigs when fishing for bass! red rock is not that snaggy if you fish a light pulley rig you will probably loose nothing or a 1 hook with the snood up the trace. anyway, 25lb. is good if you deliberately want to fish into the rough for wrasse with chance of a red cod and again use a rotten bottom. use shock if casting more than 60/70 yards though. wrasse are often close in, ie. less than 10 yards out hugging the rocks, and are caught in extremely shallow water. they reach a good size too (just over 4lb.). please put these fella's back as they are territorial and will be there again for others.

a good close range/ lobbing rig for the wrasse is a 3 foot lenght of shock with a loop knot on either end. tie a 6-8" out of black amnesia or similar and use a size 1 hook. tie in the dropper 12" down from the top. use a paperclip to attach the lead which will pull out when snagged. cheap and extremely effective. rag good as anything for wrasse, although rag peeler and mackeral are great! peeler good for codling if you're feeling lucky! straight mackeral/ or squid great for dogs.

telegraph pole- kelp for about 60 yards out but it is usually easy to pull out of, clean ground after. casting slightly to left will put you in a snaggy reef (catch 22, it holds fish). otherwise you should be alright. if you want a major doogie bashin session then get this place on a good day- sept. is really good. now get out there and catch a few.......best of lick.

m.b3 can you give me a specific area to fish with the bait in red rock that would be brilliant eg the dingy club or the tower or in between.

forgot to mention- flatten your leads with a lump hammer and they rise up to the top fast avoiding the rocks, similar to a lead lift but without the expense.

i don't have enough experience to give any specific solid sdvice- sorry. one thing i know is that fishing around low water is the most productive time for bass and that by fishing early and late your chances are greatly increased. this it seems to be more important than where you fish. cast short for fluonder and bass. crab is THE bait but rag will certainly take fish. don't be afraid to use floating beads to pop your baits up as the bass are not put off by these. it will stop crabs snatching the bait and fish the bait up off the bottom over the rocks and kelp where the bass will be. a light pulley rig is ideal for fishing close here (for bass). surface popper lures are successful here for bass aswell. the rocks at the martello tower and to the left have have pollack, wrasse doggies and dabs. heard of good whiting here in winter from a reliable source. contact Wes as he seems to know this place well. sorry i can't be of more help.

Personally, I would be inclined to use lures at red rock. Low water, to the right of the tower is a decent enough spot. Slightly rough ground, but just rough enough for bass. If you're turning to bait, prepare to fish through the dogs. Good idea from Mark about pounding out the weight, will lift it over the beds. Havent tried the ledger too much here, apart from the odd time looking for Wrasse, did the job.
If youmove to the right of the tower, theres a clean channel about 50/70yds out. I dont want to mention what "might" be caught here. :wink:

Access the telegraph pole by Ceannchor Road. Drive to the end of this road and you will come to a track which you should follow to the right. September onwards is the best time to fish here.
