The spawning migration of shad into rivers along the south coast in the late spring/early summer is an annual highlight in the calendar of many anglers. Anglers are a very important source of knowledge about shad, and their observations can make a significant contribution to conservation of this species, which is protected by the EU Habitats Directive.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has developed a survey method that records this knowledge to help track changes in fish stocks and ecosystems over time — FLEKSI, which stands for Fisher’s Local Ecological Knowledge Surveillance Indicators
