The Striped Red Mullet, Mullus surmuletus, is a relative newcomer to the Irish specimen listing.  A small mullet, typically found over rough ground and sand, it is unlikely to exceed 2.5 lbs in weight... Photo courtesy of Carlos Hernandes Gonzales of the IEO. The John Dory, Zeus faber, is a wonderful eating fish, a solitary ambush predator that shows up anywhere and can weigh > 15 lbs, although anything > 4 lbs is acceptable.  No difficulty in identifying this fish with its ultra thin design. We missed a specimen last year!
No Record Listed, Specimen 4 lbs. Irish Record: 1.54 kgs, Specimen 1.1 kgs
The Allis Shad, Alosa alosa, is a migratory fish that spawns in the rivers of southern Ireland during May and June.  A fish of  2 lbs is a fair size as they would not be expected to exceed 5 lbs at the most. It is increasingly rare. Both photos of the allis and thwaite shad courtesy of Trevor Meyer, Stirling University. The Thwaite Shad, Alosa fallax, is a similar migratory fish that spawns in the rivers of southern Ireland during May and June.  Most fishing for them is done on the rivers using small spinners but they can be taken at sea during this time or on occassion.  St. Mullins on the Barrow River is the mark for shad fishing in Ireland.
