The Grey Triggerfish, Balistes carolinensis, is a late summer migrant, weights up to 15 lbs, and is drawn to our shores by the Gulf Stream.  Take care of the sharp spines down at the tail (see how it is handled in the picture) and keep you fingers out of the mouth!  It has fierce and very sharp teeth for snapping off coral. The Corkwing Wrasse, Symphodus melops, a small wrasse, is occassionally encountered along the south and east coasts.  This is a real rarity and well worth a photograph for posterity.  They do occassionally shoal in small numbers, over a preferred territiory - try south east offshore marks. The Albacore, or Longfin TunaThunnus alalunga, is a tuna up to 100 lbs (40 kgs) that follows prey fish into Irish waters, and if the Bluefin Tuna is anything to judge by, sticks around until November!  It is now on the specimen list but it tends to be caught well out to sea, by our specialist 'tuna' boats, rather than inshore.

The Black Sea Bream, Spondyliosoma cantharus, is is showing up with increasing regularity off the south east coast, particularly on the deeper water marks. It can reach reach > 10 lbs (4kgs), but anything over 4 lbs is a very reasonable fish.  It will be very familiar to fishermen from the UK's south coast & channel islands.

The Blackspot Sea Bream, Pagellus bogaraveo, is a large fish growing up to 9 lbs or more.  Known locally as the Red Sea Bream, it is typically caught inshore over sand or mud and during the summer, although as a summer migrant, it is likely to show up anywhere including deep sea marks.  All bream fight real hard! What is referred to locally as Ray's Bream is in fact the Atlantic Pomfret,Brama brama.  This bream can reach > 3 feet ( 1 m) and weigh > 12lbs (5 kgs).  It is a shoaling fish caught only in the summer months.  My thanks to Thorke \D8stergaard and Dr Ian Lawler for their kind assistance.  Photo courtesy of Pedro Duarte
