meet: North Mayo Sat 11th February 2006

Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:15 am

Hi

HW around 5:15 pm so thinking of fishing Kilcummin Flags, weather looks favourable, will get very nasty on Sunday and Monday by all accounts. If the wind is bad I might switch to the other side of Killala Bay, near a place called Lackan, halfway between Ballina and Poolacheeny harbour - its a shingle bank coast, very rare here, gets reasonably deep, never been there but sounds interesting. If anyone has any information, PM me... or if you want to meet, well and good. Mans and few others coming too...

Will be fishing the afternoon to evening only, have promised to do jobs in the morning! There's the option of plugging for a bass on both locations...

Thanks

lfished around Kilcummin from the boat about a week ago, very quiet, a couple of small pollack, the time before (aprox 3 weeks) blowin had a nice wrasse just of the flags?, if the flags is the stepped flat rock near head, always thought this looked a spot for bass, have you had them there before? the 2 reefs head into laken bay with deep water inbetween, very fishy
cheers steve

Kilcummin "flags"

Hi Steve

The flags are on the eastern side of the headland, not right at the top. Very poor fishing unless you have a mighty cast on you and even then you have to lever the fish over the slabs... very difficult to do...

Although the place looks fishy, there is damn all there, trust me - all you get is the odd sea trout bouncing around just out of range!!! There is one reasonably deep hole (under a sheep herders hut) which looks promising but apart from one pollack mark (small) there's little enough on the western side of the headland i.e. facing Rathlacken strand. This past year it ws destroyed by the red tide - left utterly dead in large parts...

There is reputedly good ling in the current from a boat at the headland.
Iagree that it does look bassy, and with the Moy only down the road...

Thanks anyway...
