POSTPONED: specimen whitefish trip Union Hall fri 31th July

Mon Jul 13, 2009 1:46 pm

As discussed here

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=22245

i've booked colin barnes' catamaran Holly Jo

http://www.whalewatchwithcolinbarnes.com/

for Friday 31st July ( day before bank holiday weekend ) to target specimen
cod, coalie, pollack, ling, conger etc on the wrecks

Since it is the summer i'm operating under the assumption that the
weather will be fine. In the unlikely event of something being
wrong with the weather we'll have to reschedule it.

Please post in this thread if you are able to come on the trip

Just to let ye know there have been over 30 specimen cod biggest 35lb caught on those wrecks over the last few weeks, as well as coalies to 24lb, could be a great trip.

thats about as many as we need, I am assuming everybody knows how to fish in deep water using
braid. Mono cant be used as it will ruin the fishing for everyone, post here if you need advice

Peter, its not rocket science. The main thing is to get a 300 meter spool of powerpro braid, say 30lb
or 40lb. A multiplier reel is handiest, a fast gear ratio 6:1 is nicer to use in deep water, 7000 series
or penn 525 for example. You need a bit of mono backing to stop the braid slipping on the spool.
Rod can be 12/20lb class or 20lb class or anything really.

Leads needed vary depending on tide strength, wind etc, typically 10oz, maybe 8oz or 12oz.
you need some link swivels and some 20 or 30lb mono to make a flowing trace. Maybe some tube booms as well.
4 or 5 inch shads are the typical lure and you can amuse yourself swapping colours if you
believe it makes any difference.

If you have not served your time rolling about in boats get some seasickness tablets from a chemist
if its a breezey day.

that's about the size of it
