Can anyone recommend a decent digital SLR in the 250-300 euro bracket?

Cheers,

Al

Keep your eye on Ebay AL. Picked up a NIkon D50 recently with 3 lenses, bag, tripod, 2 batteries and a couple of memory cards for around the 300 mark.

Buy and Sell is also a decent spot Al along with Adverts.ie. There should be plenty of D50, D60 & D80's coming onto the market soon with the D700 being launched for christmas. Glass is the question, Try to at least get the 18-135mm lens or at the very least the 18 - 70mm. This is all the nikon stuff. I'm not that well up on Canons.

Not bad at all for the price roger. It's not a DSLR though, so you are limited to the one lens, which is fine for general point and shoot stuff, but you might find it limiting if you want to try landscapes or Macro photography.

I have a Nikon D40x and have found it really good so far. The kit lens is an 18-55mm jobbie which is ideal for using on a boat or for portrait type shots. It works with the cameras auto focus (cheaper lenses wont have this function) and it has an anti-vibration function - handy if you are on a boat as the engine vibrations can mess up cheaper lenses.

Another handy feature to look out for is the funtion that allows you to take self portraits - essential if you are on your own and want to be included in the shot.

Mine cost €499 in Argos but they have come down in price since. This price included the lens as well. You could pick up one on ebay even cheaper. When you consider that a half decent compact camera will cost about 300 and will only have half the features and adaptability, 499 is a really great price!

20X optical zoom! you can stay at home and still get pics of the beach with that (sure it could come in handy for other close up work  )!!

Went for a walk in Dollymount on Saturday and could zoom into a house in Howth, wasn't a hundred percent clear but still impressive enough for a peeping Tom in the making

20x impressive. Not really that useful, unless you get a nice bright day and can get the shutter speeds high enough. If your struggling with blurry pics at range, try setting the ISO to 400....maybe 800, but you will see some "grain" in your pics with ISO set to 800, especially darker objects.

As you said Kev not really that usefull, I dont plan on becoming Paparazzi anytime soon, Did take some pictures of the Wind surfers though which were a few hundred yards away, as you said I increased the ISO and they came out clear as day, Still have to have a proper mess around with it though to see what it can do :)
