Safe Fishing for a 5 year old

Hi Everyone

I am looking for a safe fishing venue to bring my son to for fathers day, peir preferably with plenty (if there is such a thing anymore) small fish around, pollack, wrasse, flats, anything really.

I need somewhere from wicklow to waterford area, or maybe east cork.....any ideas? PM's are fine

Welcome to the site.

I have fished (with great success) Wicklow pier, the east pier that is, with the lighthouse, fish round the back of the lighouse out to sea.

You will catch a wide variety of small(ish) fish, and it is very easy and comfortable fishing.

Your only problem may be how busy it can get.

I would suggest you search this site for previous reports (the search section is at the top of the page in the middle) from that area, and if you get a chance have a walk down the pier, chat to some of the lads, and see for yourself if its what will suit you.

theres plenty of small Dabs, Flounder, Dog Fish on most of the beaches in wicklow with a few other species showing up as well. you could try north beach wicklow or south beach Ennerilly bound to be a few fish on either of them.

I'm not sure how it fishes these days, but Ferrycarrig is certainly safe for a 5 year old. Wall is high enough to stop him falling in, not so high to make it uncomfortable to fish. Flounder, eels, bass, maybe a scorpion fish.

Dun Laoghaire Pier is great for kids using a float with a mackerel strip with a bit of time you'll catch a few mackerel...

I'll let you know how the little fella gets on, he already had his pic in the Irish Angler with his first trout, so no better way than adding to that with a few pollack or wrasse!

Did that peir summer 2 years ago, not a fish to be had on any method for anyone fishing their that busy sunny summer evening.....but sure thats fishing.....will try wicklow peir for a change seeing I'm always found perched on a rock face with a fly rod casting into a gully for pollack.....great craic! (but not for a 5 year old!)

Do you know the area? are you far from there, if not have a trip up there just to check it out?

My one concern for you is that the pier wall is open, ie no wall or fence, it may not be absolutely ideal for a 5 year old, depend's how well behaved he is I suppose :wink:

I'll be travelling up from Kilkenny mark but I'll chance it anyway, ah he is a grand little chap who is happy out sitting on his seat box with his little rod in hand....he wouldn't be the sort to go running around when fishing.....we rare him well! :D

Yeh it's been fishing well lately, you may find there is lots of mack bashers there though, be as early as you can.

Distance is not needed, most fish will be caught from the pier wall out to 100 yards, I tried float fishing a few weeks back and caught loads of pollock to rag worm, I fished around 5/10 yards out, none bigger than a pound mind you.

I didnt seem to matter about the state of the tide either, in or out :idea:

Ah thats ideal for him, he can use his little spinning road with a float set up and he will have a ball.....sure if all else fails we can catch a few crabs for the craic.

Anywhere to get rag out there on a sunday? I'm going to really struggle to get some in Kilkenny! :x

Sorry mate, I dont know of any tackle shops open on a sunday.

If you do a google or golden pages search for wicklow, then just give 'em a call.

Alternatively, post in the Q & A, for a bit of help from the local lads.

I'm Dublin based see, so I have only been to Henry's (Dublin)and Viking Tackle (Bray) for my bait, neither of which are open on a sunday.
