TOPE FROM THE SHORE

#1 Post by wilson »

Is there any known marks in the north even branching into Co. Donegal where theres a posiblity of tope from the side. Ive tried the swilly the last couple of years to no avail and its well known for its tope fishing, all i ever got was rays and doggies was even looking at the isle of man some of its beaches will produce in season. I am taking the boat down to the tope huggers reunion on the 26th of may at the swilly hopefully with a bit of guidence i'll get my first tope but would like a bit of knowledge from any shore anglers who target them from the side. Thanks...... Alastair

According to Mr Alan Yates - Tope are available from the shore on the North End of The Isle of Mann. Ive read it in a few of his books.

Get the GPS co-ordinates plugged into boat and go for it Alistair....

We are lucky enough to get a run of tope from the shore here in the IOM each summer. The beaches are clean, so you don't have to worry about losing any to snags once they are hooked (so long as your knots are good....) Despite what you might think, stiff rods and huge reels aren't necessary. All my tope fishing is done with what I would class as standard clean ground gear: match rod, 525 reel, 15lb mainline, 60lb leader. The only concession of course being a wire hook length.

The boat anglers catch plenty more than we do from the shore. Not having a boat I can't give details of precise marks, but I would say anywhere around the Jurby Head area would be a good bet.

Not sure of the rules and regs regarding posting links to other websites, but I have an article on tope shore fishing in the IOM. If anyone is interested then PM me.

Tope have been reported from the shore on one of the peninsulas west of Oranmore, in County Galway. :o

I'll second that...

tackle wise don't go any heavier than standard beach gear, 525 with 15lb line and a decent 6oz beachcaster is all you need. I would up the leader to 80lbs as I've had fish tail slap 60lb mono so bad that they've cut it clean.

Tope from the Shore

#10 Post by kieran »

Hi

Tope form the shore has been a long term ambition for me, had one by accident in the mouth of the Moy! Torr Head in Antrim is reputedly to offer action, there is a spot called the "white hole" around Carlingford that will produce them if you can find the exact spot, there are several massive tope landed every autumn winter on the beaches in Wicklow and Wexford when the coalies are in with fish up to 60 lbs photographed, I reckon Helvick Head is a good option but have no evidence of it and figure the deep water of the Saleens in Tramore at night would be an option with all those bass and flats around. Cork for tope from the shore is a mystery to me but I reckon down near Mizen has marks that have sand and deep water - any takers?

The black rock on Banna Strand is a known tope mark on big tides, Fenit Harbour (deep water pier) used to produce them at night on the ebb, the low water channel at the bottom of both Inch strand and on the far side Rossbehy is an option, with stringrays as a bonus, and there are several marks in the Shannon that can produce them on big tides, Beal Strand and Carrig Island (east) being options.

Pant! Okay, moving north, you have a couple of marks in Clare that can produce them, especially around Ballyreen (competition venue!) and they have been taken off Black Head. There is also the deep water channel at New Quay and moving up to Galway, the channel at Eddy Island outside Oranmore is another early season mark. I have heard of marks around Gorumna Island but nothing specific and reckon they are definitely present in Killary and possibly Little Killary (next competition venue)!

In Mayo, your best option is the point at Keem on Achill (impossible to get to bar in a boat) and the big river estauries especially the Moy. I reckon Portnacloy might offer some given the sand and extreme currents there. The same might apply around Belmullet, especially near Srah island which is not an island (!) and there are definitely tope in the Blacksod channel. Ballyglass pier has been given a mention but I have grave doubts about it.

Sligo can produce tope, with Aughris Head and Ballysodare Bay (the western shore) known to produce them during the summer. Streedagh Point (northern end) is reputed to hold tope on the bigger tides at night.

Donegal is a mystery although with all the fish in Swilly there must be a shore mark or two - people have mentioned the channel between the mainland and eagle island as a possible option for long distance casters.

So there... that's should keep you busy!

:D

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

there is definately marks on the mizen that have to hold them.have fished a few marks there where you are fishing at the end of headlands into deep water over sand, one of them has very strong tides. theres a certain beach down here which was supposidly meant to hold them according to a trawlerman i know. as well as this i was fishing off the boat in clon bay a number of years back with a fillet on the heavy for over sand and had a run off a fish which took about 30 yrds, dropped the bait and then ran again, i.e. typical tope run. unfortunatly it went slack when i struck
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

I've been looking into this for few years now mainly collecting information and doing recces on marks as opposed to trying all out for them as I've lacked time. There are many marks that have produced tope at one time or another but alot of that was down to being in the right place at the right time. From talking to the guys who have been round a few years theres been a down turn in the number of shore caught tope in the estuary and galway bay making once regular marks mentioned in the FB books worthless in trying. For intance cappa pier used to regularly produce good tope in June. The other thing I've learnt is the guys who regularly catch tope do so because they put lots of hours and work in with many blank sessions. Alot of these marks require a big walk, have large tide runs and suffer from weed so may be unfishable when you get there.
