I’m from South Africa and will be in Cork from 15 December till 7 January.
Please assist me with a few questions that I have regarding sea fishing in your country.
I want to bring most of my own gear over, need to check some legalities.
Bait knife- Is there a maximum length of the blade?
Do I need a licence to bait fish from shore or harbour?
Will fishing for Bass from shore be a waste of time in December?
Fine with the knife, no legislation AFAK, once your are using it while fishing.
BASS regulations 2024
1 January to 31 January, –
2 fish bag limit. A minimum size limit of 42cm applies.1 February to 31 March, only catch-and-release fishing
1 April to 31 December –
2 fish bag limit. A minimum size limit of 42cm applies.New rules apply from January 1st. 2025
Spinning for bass will all depend on the sea conditions and the color of the water.
The estuary in Youghal can turn up a few bass while spinning.
For general fishing East Cork beaches will turn up bass ,whiting, cod, painted ray coalfish, dogfish and other bits and pieces
Best bait will be peeler crab, lugworm, mackerel and sandeel.
Beaches like Youghal and Garryvoe are best fished into darkness.
