Raw Prawn

Postby Loughers » Tue Nov 10, 2020 5:36 pm

I'm wondering why there isn't much love for raw prawn as a go to bait? It's convenient, relatively cheap and seems to catch most species?

Am I alone ?

I have caught almost every species of fish using raw prawn either by itself or cocktail over the years.

Regularly takes wrasse, pollock, coalfish and had cod and conger too!

A decent bag of rag here costs around £12 and I rarely convince myself to pay that for a wee session on the rocks!

Do they need to be peeled to use them?

Loads videos on YouTube of them being used peeled and unpeeled and even as a live bait on the float for bass.
I’ve only used them while on holidays in the Canary Islands, peeled ones, caught loads of fish with them, wrasse, sea bream, great craic on a little telescopic rod
Must start trying them at home :D
A couple pics of the fish I caught using them in the Canaries

I have started using them this year with an added attracting of a tin of anchovies
another great bait as good if not better than sandeel.

I have not fished in two years hoping to change that this year with anything ?

I usually go to Fuerteventura or Lanzarote but presume they’re all similar, I was only using light tackle, wasn’t interested in catching big Rays or Bonita’s with my telescopic rod from Wish :) Loads of small fish around, those white Bream are good sport on light gear. And you do need a license to fish over there btw. Here’s a better thread

Most chinese or asian store will have cooked and uncooked prawns depending on your preference. Usually very cheap. Work a treat in the Canaries. Ground baited a gully with them on a coming tide (so it washes in) and proceeded to get a ton of different sea breams (volcanic rock gullies, razor sharp on your feet and hands) as well as wrasse and cobblers. Best just under a kilo. Done similar here and found them work better in summer and autumn, not good in winter or spring and better on rocks marks, presumably cos that's where you find them...

Put out a collapsible crab trap with fish scraps for bait for an hour our more off a pier wall you'll have nearly enough for a full session
