Fish ID Quiz

Postby johnwest » Mon Apr 06, 2020 5:09 pm

Being more or less confined to barracks and with a lot of time to kill, I took a browse through my collection of fish pics. After a session of cropping, cutting and pasting, here is a fish mosaic; see how many you can identify. More to follow (if there is any interest). Take care, johnwest.

Nice little brain teaser, Well done sir.

Trying to cross reference between the answers so far. In John1's selection he has give 2 different answers in 3 of his selection species #13,14,16
ie. sandeel and launce are 2 different species so are seahorse and pipe fish also blenny and shanny.
Are you selecting one as the right answer
Boat species '15 (31) Shore species (21) Total species 40 Specimen: (B) Bluemouth .92kg,(B) Spotted ray 6lb,(S) Painted ray 12.4lb

Thanks Donal, I'm allowing for alternative names for the same species e.g blenny/shanny, sandeel or launce will be acceptable as there is no scale to judge size, otherwise be as specific as possible especially when there are several closely related species, eg gurnards and rocklings, as I have tried to show distinguishing features. Note I haven't said they are correct!

Just wondering can we change our choices, or should we all stick with our first choices to be fair. I'm easy.

Oh no he hasn't! Revised scores to follow shortly.
@John1, "to be fair" later entries can get clues from early ones so feel free to submit changes.
No 19; I don't think it's possible to distinguish between lesser and greater from the photo so I'll allow either answer. I think this gives Donal an extra mark and the joint lead with Chuckaroo on 17.
@Chuckaroo, you mercenary so and so! You can have a bag of crisps but you'll have to share with Donal. Hope you both like cheese and onion!

On #19 I called it a huss because of the size of the teeth. The dogs down this way have teeth more akin to a ray. I'll have to be more careful the next time I'm sticking the fingers down their mouth to get a hook back

It's like the difference between a smooth hound and a tope. Put finger in to get back your hook, if you get your finger back it's a smooth hound if you don't it's a tope
