Orkney 520

Postby hush1 » Wed Feb 06, 2019 3:10 pm

The Orkney 520 has a bung hole on the outside of the stern and also on the inside of the stern. Where does the bung go?....what the purpose of the well in the back which will fill with water if the bung in put on the inside?

Any thoughts?

Put a bung in both! The most important is the one on the outside of the stern so if you only have one bung, that's where it should go, otherwise the boat will fill with water. The internal bung allows drainage of the underfloor (though there shouldn't be any ingress of water), I think you can also deliberately flood the underfloor with "ballast water" to give more stability at rest but I'm not certain about that and wouldn't recommend it without further research.

Johnwest is fairly on the ball there. Yeah the inner is to drain the inner hull. You can put some water in here but it will only slow the boat down. Maybe if you were plugging through a very heavy sea. The outer bung is the man. As the Orkneys get older they can leave a drop of water in through the keel band screw holes.

Very important post!

A couple of my buddies got this wrong resulting in their 21 foot sailing boat being re-christened U-521 after spending a Christmas at the bottom of Lough Derg.

She was recovered and refitted and but it cost a fair chunk of cash.
