Fishing from rocks

Postby TheFirstApostle » Sun Feb 09, 2020 12:20 pm

Just looking for a bit if advice, never really done much sea fishing.
I'll be heading down to Wexford most weekends from mid March (ardamine beach) just between courtown and cahore.
Would like to do a bit of fishing while there but want to keep my kit as minimal as possible.
I prefer spinning/lure fishing, just want a setup that I can just go rod and reel in hand and get fishing straight away.
Could you guys point me in the right direction of a decent rod and reel combo( and preferred lures) for catching mackerel and the likes?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hey, what would your budget be? I'm not entirely keyed in on the lure side of things but there's plenty of guys on this site who will help you out but it's good to know how much you're willing to spend.

What would your budget be? Typically I'd go with a 9-10ft rod paired with a 4000 sized reel. As for lures the smaller sized kiltys will take pretty much all predatory species

Budget would be up to around 100-150 rod and reel, not sure if that's enough to get a decent setup

Dont really know any lure rods in that price range but just a consideration, I would avoid a lure rod with the micro eyes at the top. The large eye at the top allows for leader knots to pass through nicely but more so the stop knot for float fishing.

Mackerel on a float is exciting stuff.

Okay on that budget I'd spend higher on the reel ..maybe a shimano sienna. Rod mabe a catana or similar. I do like a bigger top eye as suggested especially if using braid
