Tope fishing

Postby Thompst111 » Sat Mar 23, 2019 11:03 am

Anyone have any signs of tope this year yet, I know it's early but gonna start fishing for them next week have one rod out there for them Everytime now. Just wondering has anyone got one or been bitten off by one. Also any tips for catching one would be great (bait used ect). Was watching a video where he used a fillet of Mack and two fillets of whiting worked great for him.

You haven’t mentioned what part of the country you’re going to try. The earliest I’ve tried for them in North Wexford is mid April and I’ve had them then. Regarding bait, they’ll take most fishy offerings, but Mackerel is always good, I like using heads or flappers as they tend to be more doggy proof. Live whiting lightly hooked through the tail work great too.

Got excited there with mid April. Yeah from the shore will be fishing north Wexford like ballyvalden/tinnabearna. O know it's early heard someone was bitten off few weeks ago on tinnabearna. So hoping for the best

I heard that spurs were being caught off the beach down there recently, if true, could have caused the bite offs.

Wait until you hit a shore tope, you will soon forget the smoothies :D , we have a plague of hounds at the moment here in Wales, they aren.t giving the dogfish time to pick up the baits :D

What is the fishing for them like in late September, early October? Where's worth a try at that stage? Would love to catch one but out of the country until then.
