Lure fishing bass

Postby Paddyschoice » Wed May 23, 2018 3:00 pm

Went out yesterday evening with the good weather to do a bit of spinning for bass near Camden fort.
Not a bite again... I've been spinning for bass around 12/15 times in the last year and have never even got a bite so I think I'm just going to pack it in and stick with the bait fishing... seems to be a lot handier!!

Weather was good, no wind, high tide was at ~2330, fished 2130 - 2245... fished a surface popper... no other anglers in the area, fished before dusk through to pretty much darkness. Hope this info helps someone - because f**k all it did me!! At least the weather was good!

I have a few sandeel lures alright, but never had a touch off them either last summer, not sure if its the lures I'm using or is it where I'm going... but lure fishing is frustrating alright - especially when you haven't even got a bite from that type of fishing! I've heard when you get a fish using that type of light tackle its mighty though!!

Hang in there....it's worth the wait.
Where about are you fishing?

What lures are you using?

I've heard it is mighty when you do get a bite alright, its why I've given it this long so far!!
I've been using surface poppers, sandeel lures and a few other silver lures. I'd mostly be fishing the rocks along by Crosshaven out and around to Church bay... I've read that its good along that stretch but not for me apparently!!

I haven't fished that area before but the same basics apply in most if not all areas.
Spend time on the water. Keep record of the time spent. Stage of tide, wind, water clarity, temp. Even if you do not catch you can learn from this too. (Courtesy of JimH ;) )

Vary the speeds of your retrieve. Some people retrieve too quickly. If you think you are going slow enough go slower.

Vary your lures. You'll learn that some lures work better at different stages of the tide or time if the day.
Make note of this too.
Try a mullet Feed Shallow. Simple to use as it's just a straight retrieve but it's a very effective lure.

Don't go out and buy every lure or bit of tackle out there because you saw it on someone's website. Online blogs can be often promoting lures/gear as they have a vested interest.
My box has less than 20 lure types of which a dozen, if even, get most use.

Learn your stretch of water. A visit to the area at low tide can reveal useful information on Rocky areas, channels, weed banks etc. Make note of areas like this as these are where the fish lie.

Keep fishing. You will learn much much more from your own days out fishing even the days you don't catch. Just learn from your experience on the water.

Enjoy it. Don't beat yourself up if you blank. Everyone blanks. If you were to hook into fish every outing it would be called "Catching" and not "Fishing".
