Monkstown wall

The good news is that there are plenty of cod coming off the wall , the bad news is that they are all about 12ounces and in amongst a plague of pin whiting . Fresh crab was stripped and the hooks clean in 5 mins and switched to frozen and only got a couple more minutes out of that . Could of been crab but as soon as the bait hit the bottom the tip was rattling with the interest of what I'm presuming were whiting . Tried a live bait rig behind a 5/0 and soon could see a whiting had done its job but didn't have a touch . At least he swam off non the worse for his ordeal when I wound in and At least the weed was not around considering the mountains of it I encountered on yaughal beach Monday night .
Thought it was too early to be fishing the wall but sometimes you just have to give it a go . I'd keep your crab for somewhere else at the moment guys

So when could you expect (how early would you hope for) the better cod to be moving in..?

Hello chuckaroo, there will be guys with far greater knowleadge of the wall than me but this time last year I was catching good numbers of cod between 3and 6lb from there but in my opinion most spiecies have been late this year for what ever reason ,global warming adding to increase in water temperature , which craft or the cod are boycotting the muster region because Paul o Connell was sold to France I'm not sure . Realistically I would say the the better sized fish are up to a month behind the smaller fish and a drop in temperature would help , I think the larger fish are still out at sea feeding on sprat and mackerel as they are still about so they don't have any need to come in to shallower water yet . I will give it a go next week but I knew last night as soon as I arrived at the wall it was too early as tide and time were perfect and I was the only guy there . Couple of guys arrived after a bit but think everyone was in the same mindset that it was worth trying .

I wouldn't jump to conclusion that it's going to be a bad year for cod- in inshore water temperature terms we are a month behind where we would normally be this time of the year. October was insanely mild. I would be surprised if the cod don't arrive once temperatures finally start to drop.

I'd have to agree, temps are very high for this time of year so you'd expect them to be late. Reports from elsewhere suggest this year the average size could be significantly higher than last year with similar stock numbers.
North Sea cod stocks have recently been taken off the red list.

If you keep an eye on the UK fishing facebook pages, you will see that there are some excellent cod being caught from the shore at the moment

Took a run down that way this morning to see for myself. Tides were perfect and crossing over Wellington bridge, the western side of the city, I could see no flood water coming over the weir.
when I got down there was only one other angler there and he was gone after an hour. Always a bad sign where the place is looking vacant

Doublers of fish every cast with only the odd whiting making it over the 30cm mark.

A few years ago cod showed up in late September after a big storm.

Air temperatures are also up and this is keeping the beaches warm when the tide is out. So when the tide comes in over it the water warms a little bit more. This would be more prevalent on the Cork cod beaches where the tide would go out about a 100yds at low water.

A lot of the early cod that do come in after a blow in September are hanging around out on the reefs all summer. Posted here about them

What a photo - stunning.

Same story here really, good few grey cod around in daylight but tiny. Any hope of a decent one rests on a red cod in the rough. Storm-wise, it's supposed to kick off up here today and blast for a few days. Could this be what we're waiting for?

I was above in Dublin last night and driving back down to Cork the weather was very wet and windy but seemed quite nice when I got back here at about 15.30 . Was it rough earlier today ?

Twas howling this morning with rain as well! Not nice!

Except for the shower of rain that came with the rainbow it was tee shirt and sun glasses with only a slight ripple in the water

One of the nice things about fishing Monkstown is that it's well sheltered from westerly winds

Was down that way yesterday so I had a few casts, small cod every cast no whiting. stayed for about 2 hours after low water.
Not looking good

Anything cod-wise in monkstown lads? I've 2 buddies coming this weekend so I'm trying to get them onto some fishies.

I fished the wall yesterday afternoon from 2 to 4 o clock. That was an hour before and an hour after low water.
I used crab sand eel and squid . i caught one good whiting , not another tap
