525 mag2 built quality.

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Certainly not to the quality youd expect from penn beachbuddy. Pardon the pun but i really ground my gears after opening it up and see the poor quality inside. Fathom dose look a better reel but it was mag control i wanted so 525 was the option i bought and disappoint compared to the older generation 525. Its a pity and a bad move on for penn. I do hope in time they rectify this. For now i will look else where.

China rules the world in manufacturing its up to the customer what they want put into the product. Ill always hope its a one off bad batch or some other flaw that passed througg the net. Ita just a bad state of affairs that alot of known quality brands have choosen to move manufacture to china and spent peanuts on the product.

The reel is back with penn. I had a look at two over the weekend and both seemed to be ok with none of the issues i was having. Should have some info later today on whats happening with it. On a good note i came across a 525 mag extra still new in its box so i snapped it up.

So lads it looks like multiplier men should really mind with great care all their old ABU, DAIWA, and PENN reels, so as to get the longest possible out of them. Someone might advise us on AKIOS, have they been around long enough to really form solid opinions? As for the switch to fixed spools, they probably suffer the same quality drop as the multipliers.

On foot of all this, I abandoned the 515 purchase and got an Abu Chrome Rocket instead (good deal from Henry's). It says "Made in Sweden" on the side so here's hoping...

Ive had my 525 mag2 the last 2 years and ive had no problems with it, if your wanting a reel that will stand the test of time tho it has to be the daiwa slosh, ive had my sl20sh for about 17 years now, its been dropped, buried under sand, swimming in the sea and driven over (dont ask.... :o ) and it still runs perfect!!!

Iv a pair of 515s an had silly amount of abu 6500s the penn 515 is a much better reel for fishing imo the abus are great for casting but have no power when caught in snags etc

Have a feeling the latest ABUs with the tag "Made in Sweden" might be a bit of a misnomer, I'd guess, parts made in Asia, assembled in Sweden.

That doesnt have to mean bad. My son-in-law is an industrial designer in Germany, he went out to China, found a parts manufacturer he liked, stood over them until they turned out exactly what he wanted, and has rigorous pre-assembly quality control back home. It can be done....

Thanks Hugo for allaying some of my fears, but it is hard to deny that when some of the guys stripped these new reels (particularly Penns) they were fairly adamant about the drop in quality.
