Chasing cod

Mon Nov 18, 2013 3:28 pm

Kayak(s): Hobie

Duration:7ish -10.30

Tide: Rising

Weather: Fairly good for this time of year

Bait: Rag and Lug worm

Rigs: 1 up 1 down

Results: 15 Codling, 2 Pollack and 4 Wrasse

Report:
Had a chance for an early session on Saturday morning. With the weather looking good and the tides going the right way I decided to chase them Cod again. It was still dark launching but flat calm. As I trolled out to the reef I picked up a pollack As I got there I seen there was a pot sitting directly over where I wanted to be "happy days" :D Initailly I baited up one rod with Rag and fished the other one with the soft plastics. The Rag was prodcing on nearly every drop and I wasnt long in reeling in some ok size Codling. I switched the other rod over to Lug worm and found it didnt do much better, the Rag was outdoing the Lug on every drop  I decided a change of tactic with the Lug and I baited up with 3 Lug on each hook and left them loosely hanging (should have took as pic) any how the fish straight to take the Lug no problem . By now the Codling and Wrasse were hitting fast and hard. Even had a stalker on this trip. A dam seal stalked me for about 2 hours, the little fooker was trying to hit the fish as I was reeeling in. He had no fear in him  It was a smashing morning to be on the water, very peaceful, good weather and plenty of fish. :D

Waterford should produce well. Me personally I haven't fished it but have in cork and Wexford. What kayak have you chosen. It's recommended a sit on top at least 13 ft long for the coast. You can add rod holders yourself fairly handy and cheap too.

My kayak is a sit on top.what safety Items do I need? And I was watching the video and seen them things stick out from the side of the kayak what are they for? my kayak is around 13 ft long could you go out in winter or is it to dangerous.

Where to begin :P
I wear a drysuit and PFD on all trips along with them I have on me
VHF,PLB(personal locator beacon), strobe light, flare and in a dry bag I carry a space blanket, spare torch, batteries, flint, some bars of chocolate and a hat. All of it was built up over time.
They are called side kicks they help stabilise the kayak, not thats its needed as the kayak is very stable but its also handy to stand up with them on

When you're kayak fishing does it matter which way the tide is or is it better on an in comming tide?
What's the biggest danger when your out on the kayak?

Do you have to go out far to catch fish or just find a reef and fish it?
Is there any reef close to shore where I can start fishing from the kayak?

it depens on the area your fishing, some fish will be more active when its a full tide but others when its running.
The biggest danger is hypothermia thats why I wear a drysuit and then layer up under neat.
I have a mark that produces 80 meteres from shore so no you dont always have to go out far although in some cases you will like for tope I was heading out 4km.
Im sure there is a reef close to you, its just about finding it, local knowledge can be a great thing

New to the site...

Great video as always.. Looks a tad cold but weather could be a lot worse....
Looking forward to "Yaking" in the future, whats the best way to find out what the fishing grounds is like without having to buy and fit electrical equipment..? i.e. sandy, rocky, shallow or deep..

Thanks.
