I’ll vote against the government, says PD TD Fiona O'Malley.
Stephen Collins Political Editor

. A PROGRESSIVE Democrat TD has announced she will vote against the government on the issue of driftnet fishing for salmon and says she expects the other seven members of her party in the Dail to do the same.
With tension increasing between the two government parties over the waste of taxpayers' money on expensive consultants, Fiona O'Malley
upped the ante when she
effectively invited the opposition parties to put down a vote on the issue and promised to join them in the anti-government lobby.
"If there is a vote in the Dail, 1 will be voting to end the current system which poses such a clear threat to salmon stocks and 1 would expect every other PD deputy to do the same," the Dun Laoghaire TD told the Sunday Tribune.
Last week, the PDs published a policy document prepared by Senator John Dardis which advocated a ban on driftnet fishing and a compensation package for the fishermen who currently have licences.
The policy was endorsed yesterday by the national council of the PDs at a meeting in Galway.
It has already received the backing of the entire PD parliamentary party.
The Minister of State for the Marine, Pat The Cope Gallagher, has refused to consider the phasing out of driftnet fishing.
The majority of the licences for driftnet fishing are issued to people in his home county of Donegal.
O'Malley said that it was time her party applied pressure on the government to ensure that such a valuable national resource was not wantonly destroyed.
"The government has to deal with the issue both on environmental grounds and on economic grounds. Not
only are we destroying such a valuable part of our heritage, we are also destroying a resource that is so important for the economy at remote parts of the country
"1 would welcome a motion coming before the Dail, as that appears to be the only way that we can deal with the issue and apply the pressure necessary to get a change of policy on this matter," she said.
The TD added that she was surprised the opposition parties had not tried to tackle the issue by way of a Dail motion up to now.
