did a good bit of it up to last year, concentrating on the rips at the mouth of a few estuarys and bays down here (be careful wading at night) with good success. at night ive found it best to fish bulkier flies than during daytime in the same conditions. my best fly was 6-7 inch dahlberg diver in black with a small anount of flash. think the big muddler head gives off good vibratory signals which help the bass home in on the fly, while the bigger fly in black helps create a very visable silohette.

fishing wise i tend to keep the cast about 20-25yds to try and keep down the chances of tangles, although the fish tend to be closer so diatance isnt a major issue. i also like to fish a slower and very jerky retrieve to impart as much erratic movement as possible in the fly.

Yeah, it works alright. Lumpy has given you the basics there. Jim Hendrick is the the guy I would say that has the most informative and interesting perspective on this. Maybe he will put somethin in Irish Angler about it.

Def worth a go so then. I had a few good nights last summer with an ounce of lead and a sandeel using v light line and rod (spinning) on beach on kerry and even though not casting far i would ind in a little every couple of minutes and tended to meeet the fish very close in. Set me thinking about the fly rod will def give it a go in similar conditions this year. Hugh falkus as far as i remember went for the darker the better surface lures for night time sea trout. And good and big seems same works for lumpy.getting excited now to try!

Thanks Jim.

As a salmon angler originally, I tend to ignore dirty waters. This information is invaluable.

got my replaced tip section yesterday...(£15 inc.p&p)
Thank you Wychwood!
Went to a well known sandy/estuarine spot just outside cork harbour and fished a size1/0 gurgler right in to darkness...No luck!
Actually i didnt see any kind of fish there which is strange...usually bursting with mullet.

It was sheltered from the south/south-west wind and i waded around several spots .. but no joy...
Oh how i wish for a spell of hot calm weather....
