Bass on trout tackle

Mon Apr 02, 2018 9:59 am

I do a lot of fly fishing for brown trout on rivers and lakes and was wondering would it be possible to fly fish for bass with this tackle. If not what type of rod, reel and line would you recommend.

I've no doubt a light setup will do fine but most would run with a 8/9wt rod for bass. It's I was advised to get anyway. The flies can be quite long and in many cases you are trying to get the best of distance...

Thanks for the replies. I have a daiwa 11' in 8wt with intermediate and floating lines. I think this should be capable of fighting a bass. I am new to SWFF and I was wondering what flies I should use.

its a good weight rod as in 8. 11 foot would be very tiring though fishing it overhand. I use a 9 foot 7 wt mostly now and sometimes a 9 foot 8 wt. The main thing is to ger out there. Clousers gurgles deceivers sand eel patterns will all work.

An 11 foot rod would be very hard work when trying to cast bass flies at distance all day long. a 9 foot 8/9 wt rod is what you need. A 9.5 foot 7 wt would be about as light as you could go for bass if you get the right conditions and are using lighter flies.

Lighter 6/7wt Trout rods can be good fun for Mackerel in summertime, if you are lucky enough to be in a spot where they are close to a pier or shore.

Thanks again for all the replies. Does anyone know what type of mark would be best to start on (Rocks, estuary, etc.)?

Go to West Waterford and fish any Rocky mark to East Cork. You will be looking to fish over shallow rocky reefy ground that get's exposed by the tide. Fish the outgoing tides until you know a mark well enough to fish the incoming tide. It would be worth wearing a life jacket as well.. I've had a few scares from rouge waves.
