Pollock/Bass Setup

Thu Jan 22, 2015 9:02 pm

Hello All,
I started back fishing again last year and the missus decided to buy me a Shakespeare Agility XPS #8 for my birthday.
I have picked up a reel and lines(F & I) over the past while and I am itching to get going

However I was wondering about basic setups for Pollock and Bass.

For Pollock do lads use an intermediate line with a weighted fly or leader to get down to the fish or would a Di7 line be better suited?
For the Bass is it mostly an intermediate line and a 10'-12' leader or am I on the wrong track?

Thanks in advance for any info/advice or a few bass marks for a SWFF beginner!!

Full sinking for Pollack in deep water the faster the better. For hbass I never use anything other than floating as I fish shallow water.

That's pretty much the way I see it too
It depends on the depth of water and where the fish are, pollack or bass
If the fish are down deep then u will have to definitely get down to them, a fast sinking line is the best way. Mind you, if they are very deep then I think fly fishing defeats the purpose!
for shallow water... Floating line. And in between.. An intermediate
The thing about weighted flies is that very often there wil be a bow in the line (downwards) which can affect your connection with the fly.. More reason just to have a sinking line and short leader.
I wud only fish weighted flies if I was wanting to pull/bounce a fly along a clean seabed
Good luck. I have been tying a few salt water flies recently, very tempted to wet a few tomorrow!

Thanks for that Chuckaroo.
Will keep the leader a bit shorter than I thought so.
Here tying up a few myself. Hoping to get out next weekend all going well.
Bit of a trip from my place to Cork, Kerry or Clare but for even a sniff of a fish its worth it!!

Consider a floating line with a ghost tip for bass fishing - it is one of my favourite lines for bass fishing.
