Poppers

Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:36 am

Guys,

2 poppers I tied.

Bodies are ethafoam which I "turned" using a dremel as a "lathe" and a bit of sandpaper. They are mounted on a tube to stop the foam splitting.

Happy for any comments, observations, etc.

I forgot to mention that I coat the ethafoam with Softex after I've shaped it. Gives it a nice finish.

I tied them for bass but I'd like to think any fish looking for a meal on the surface would go for them.

Ethafoam is a closed cell foam. You can buy blocks of it anywhere that sells fly-tying materials.

Softex is a type of varnish which is flexible when dried.

The bodies on these 2 are 1" but I've done up to 2".

I'd just use GRHEs, maybe with a lead underbody.

I make poppers myself the handiest thing to use are earplugs the orange cone shaped ones, they seem too soft at first but no shaping involved just put a slit halfway through then I coat it in super glue and wrap tin foil around the wet glue, then stick on sequins for eyes and a black dot ,I then use different coloured permanent markers sharpies are great and put colour on the back and put spots stripes gills etc then cover in epoxy and job done,I have some up on adverts.Ie ,search fishing flies saltwater (don't know how to put up photos from iPhone on this site ,anyone?)

Was in tescos today and found foam sheets in the kids art and craft section, about 20 different colour sheets for €2.50 they would be handy for crease flies or whatever your imagination comes up with
