A mullet update

Wed Mar 03, 2010 10:25 pm

Right so lads, i finally got my arse and went mullet fishing

The short of it is, i had four hook ups and lost all of them, i blame the tiny hooks. they were sifting through the weed at the edge my usual lagoon spot(see my reports for more info/pics) and i think they were feeding on grub like organisms.

The fly in question was the only half suitable one in the box, a okey dokey buzzer tied to a size 10 hook. white body with a green head. I was retrieving in fast 20-25cm strips. Seemed to work ok.

Weather permitting(and when better prepared) i will give them another go, although it will have to wait till the new moon on the Monday after next. Getting time off school and tides to coincide in nigh on impossible

A possible sighting by Mr.Murdoch last week but he's not 100% sure.
Another month or 2 before the big numbers get to us.

I usually have to wait until late April, or early May at my local marks.I have tied up some flies which are on the DVD
by Danish flyfisher Brian Kjaer, made of green marabou and dubbing, the hook is totally hidden and just might fool the
fish this time.Fingers crossed.

Joe.

None showing in North donegal as yet. Alex, you wouldn't ever go throw some stones into that lagoon of yours, chase them up this way a bit quicker, eh?

I haven't started looking for them yet Alex, but I intend to very soon.
I'm really looking forward to fishing for them again , last year was my first serious year fishing for them and I loved it.
I'm away bass fishing for ten days in a couple of weeks time so when I come back from that I'm gonna concentrate on the mullet then . I'll keep you posted on how I get on.
Good luck with them yourself.

Joe, my fly fishing buddy uses marabou and does very well, although that might be down to the fact hes way better than me    . I'm also not convinced that the hidden hook makes too much of a difference, i often use large enough hooks that are well exposed just to get a good hook hold.

Davy and Colin, good to hear about the possible mullet sighting, hope ye get some.

Tanglerat, the only answer i can give to that request is no

Neil, Let us know if ya get fishing for them.

Hope the bass fishing goes well Paula.

Alex

I would agree with you on that one.
I think Davy had 2 fish last year on bare hooks. The mullet took them while he was reeling in to replace the bread that had come off during the cast.
I was also getting loads of hook ups on teal blue and silver flies that i was retrieving quickly through groups of fish.

Ha ha ha ha ha......I can't believe I am reading this lol!!.........Why not try dynamite instead of reeling bare hooks through a shoal of mullet? Surely that would be even easier??......
