Just picked up a fly rod, reel etc etc and plan to take it up, first session being this weekend.
Are there any major common mistakes I should watch out for..?
Going to take it handy, get the casting down first etc etc. Cant wait.

go to a professional instructor
make sure your gear is 'matched'
take your time in all the aspects - a lot of time
be prepared to struggle and experience new levels of frustration
do not become obsessed with distance
concentrate on wrist, arm and shoulder position, loop formation and trajectory and learn to double haul, drift and the essential 'beat the wind techniques'
be ready for the way your world will change as you achieve and experience each small success - I hope you never look back and I wish you every success.

Sound advice Jim.
Will try it after the 15th of the month. Although I'd say the bass are more than safe with me and the fly rod around but you never know..!

Don't wait till the 15th Eoghan. Find a patch of grass and start practicing you casting now. There is some excellent video tuition online now a days. Jim has pointed out the most important aspects in his post. Practice, Practice and practice some more. Casting can be frustrating to get the hang off, but every extra yard or nice cast will leave you smiling. Don't give up as it must be one of the most rewarding aspects of fishing when you achieve some results.
