Can I use my Salmon tackle to go SWFF?

Hi

I am thinking of taking up SWFF as I have just moved to NW Ireland and I am a stones through from some lovely beaches. Is it possible to use the Salmon FF tackle I already have or will I have to start all over again and buy new gear ?

I often use same gear for Salmon fishing and SWFF.

Only thing is to make sure your reel is SW proof, you may want to check your rod rings as well.

Yes, but it takes a hell of a lot to make sure it is.

I mean I had my fly reel fishing one time. I rinsed it off. Still wet so it looked fine. A few weeks later I took out the reel again, it was covered in sand and completely unusable.

You need to place reel in water overnight ASAP.

Best to get a reel that is saltwater proof.

One I bought on e-bay. It was very reasonable.

I have seen them many times since on ebay.

Description was something like
machine alluminium...GNC....resistant

I also have a vision XLA that has never seized.

That's another thing.

It will take on a lumpy effect and generally it will not cast as good again.

I think you should buy a different line or again if you can clean it down as soon as you are finished.But ,I would go for a sinking shooting head.

Being honest with you. Saltwater is very. very corrosive it will destroy all of your gear.


I have a platinum XD saltwater II rod, even this is getting rusty round the rings.
I had a greys GTX, which seized straight away.
I had a very good reel that seized after about 2 months of SW use.
I have DH sharpes of aberdeen rod (salmon rod) which is showing no signs of saltwater use after 4 years.
XLA reel is perfect for last 4 years.
The GNC reel is for 6-7 weight, great little reel. Completely enclosed the same as the XLA.

I'm sure you have a 9 or 10 wt rod for salmon. Just give the eyes a rub down after each outing.

The more I look into it the more it seems like I'm just about starting again

How about my wading gear.....? I have Simms stockingfoot waders to go with Simms felt soled wading boots. From what I can tell I should think I'm going to be wading on sand, fishing off the beach in other words.
