abu garcia BG7000LD

Anyone have any views on it??

Gerrys in morcambe have it on offer at the moment at 66 pounds.

tonys tackle had some of these bg abus over at the show in belfast last weekend for £70, they looked a nice reel and i had heard good reports on them, but i lifted a few and gave them a few turns.....didnt feel like a smooth abu to me....seemed very rough running or something....

Couple of points to ponder: I've had one for 7 or 8 years now but its a 7000C4 LD, and no mention of BG. I use it a lot for light tackle boat fishing [ with no complaints ] but whilst I am a full convert to lever drag reels, I'm not convinced of their need for shore angling.
Still at £70 must be worth a try, considering that's the usual discount price of the classic 7000

Just in relation to what BigPhil mentioned there about these Abus. Mine arrived yesterday and it looked lovely. However, as BigPhil said they definitely dont seem to run as smooth as other Abus. I have got a load of Abu reels, 12-14 of the things, and this one just doesn't feel right at all. The "made in Taiwan" sticker didnt do anything to inspire confidence either. There is no serial number stamped on the foot either unlike every other Abu I have including the little small bait casters.

I opened mine up to have a look at the spool and on the LHS of that there are deep lathe marks and scoring under where the Brake blocks are fitted.
I have a bottom of the range years old budget ABU Seven C that feels way better than this. I am also curious as to the retail prices that are being charged at the moment for these reels. You can buy batches of 10 on ebay for between £300 and £400, and as I mentioned I picked mine up for £51. Even the mail order guys have them at £69.

Does anyone have an English speaking Contact/Email address for same I can get in touch with to voice my concerns on this. No point blaming the supplier in this case, the reel is as described and fully functional, it just seems the usual quality isnt there thats all. There has been much mention of possible rejects being sold on as new etc etc, I dont want to get into that but its definitely what it feels like. If that is the case then the offending people need to be reported. If these reels are,(and there is at this stage no reason to think otherwise) kosher then Abu need to get there act together and get back on track. As I said, I have a load of Abu reels and for the most part their engineering is second to none. They are taking over from the much lauded 525s I own for my day to day fishing.

I am removing the name of the supplier who sold it from one of my previous posts also as I dont wish to create any scandal surrounding them if this does turn out to be a an Abu problem.

I delibertly didn't comment on this thread till I read petekd's last post there. I didn't want to re-hash old grounds............ If someone more clever than me did a search of my previous posts, they'd find my opinion on what's happening to ABU from a year or two ago.

Basically, ABU gets bought out, accountants get sent in, work is outsourced from Sweden to the Far East, quality takes a dive............ :(

I picked one up last year and it went through its first season on the boat with flying colours......early days I know but it has performed perfectly well so far even with a pair of 7lb pollock hanging of it

I think we have been down this road before either here or on BAI. For what its worth my 7000C4LD has a serial no on the reel seat and claims to be "designed, inspected, and assembled in Sweden from components made in Taiwan"; whereas my BG 9000 has no serial no but claims to be "Made in Sweden".

I would agree with Tanglerat on the price factor and certainly would not compare them with my other old model ABUS some of which are still going strong after 30 to 40 yrs abuse.

For the money paid, it seems to be worth it but with RRP way in excess of that and silly money being quoted in this country from tackle shops for one it just raises a few questions thats all.
