Okuma 280 magic FS reel

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Okuma 280 magic FS reel

Postby Donagh » Tue Aug 03, 2004 4:50 pm

I bought an Okuma 280 magic FS reel earlier this year to have as a cheap 2nd reel. Its very large reel which is a positive and a negative and well able deal with decent sized fish. Its popular for mackerel bashing off cliffs as it can crank a full house of mackerel up. There's two reel spools a plastic one for 250yds 15lb line and a metal one for 200yds 25/30lb line. Which means the one reel will do for both clean and rough. The spool is very wide which means distance isn't restricted and retrieve speed is upped. The plastic piece that holds the bail arm has a groove worn in from being looped when the bail arm closes and this makes a loop around it more likely.

Now for the major problem. A metal insert wore on the drag adjust from putting the reel spool on. This eventually meant the drag couldn't be tightened to retrieve. I got the affected part replaced but it seems to be happening again. A bloke in work had the same problem after changing the spool a couple of times. Seems like a design defect.
