meant to write a review of these hooks earlier but never got around to it. i was given a few packs of these to have a go with in the summer. they are a "semi circle" hook designed on the same concept as circle hooks but in a manner which allows one to use bait effectively. i used these extensively for shore fishing for dogs while the ray were quite in a mark near schull and was amazed with their hooking ability.ive used circle hooks off the boat and found them very effective but these were different. they were much more user friendly, baiting which in this case was with sandeel sections and squid was childs play and ever dog (and 2 thornbacks) were hooked in the corner of the mouth. i also tied a few flies on them for experimentation and while they are not remotely suitable to fly fishing (their not stainless, they have bait barbs on the shank and the wire is to light) their hooking ability was very impressive, my ratio of takes to fish landed was increased. now i must source a similar stainless hook for fly tying

ya i use these hooks regularly off of the boats for animal species, they really are the dogs bollox, especially if your spped fishing as for some reason they seem to be impossible for the likes of dogs to swallow and invariably they are lip hooked, also really easy to bait and give a grat bait precentation with no chance of the barb getting masked.

definitely worth buying

I was wondering, what is the catch rate compaired to a normal hook?

Do you drop many bites?

I find sometimes during the summer and the dogs are about they can be hard to hook, not all the time though. They seem to pick the bait up but for some reason dont get hooked and then drop the bait and move on. Do you think the semi-circle hooks would help with that kind of situation?

lumpy: yes the one and same, couldn't believe my luck.

Norfolk and Goode: i find that i dont really miss many bites at all, infact due to the shape of the hook i find that it makes hooking easier because its impossible to get at the bait without hitting the hook.

Can you get these hooks mail order?

Has anyone compared them to varivas semis?

ya i find that their hook up rate is pretty high, although i do tend to leave bites develop a we bit longer than with regular j hooks. i got them in dans at the half way, think veals do them.

I can't see them on the veals site. I doubt they'd be stocked in any of the local shops here in limerick.I'll have to keep my eye open for them.
