Veals and Gerrys are doing them with a Surfmaster 850 for £170ish or with a Mag Xtra for £20 odds more.
Thinking about one myself....

cant beleive any one would consider casting a rod this big in ireland i think 14 foot is big enough any where in ireland you would want to be a giant or something to cast an 18ft rod

i know it is but ud just b able to fish the beach with that rod imagine that on the rocks or pier id never put that sort of money into a rod just to catch flatties or dogfish with balls to that would rather spend the money on a good reel

as for the powerstix me and wife both have one and so far it does the job grand. But 18ft a bit much i think for amount of places and time you can use it not be a good buy.
I am a big fan of long rods but would never use anything over 15-16ft and then only on a day with little wind and a clean beach.
If its to try the long rod thing stick to a 13-14ft then if you dont like it can be used form rocks then not a waste taking up space.
Have a look at the grauvell range also veals have a few good ones for sale at moment.
Powerstix on ebay also go for £40-60 or try southend angling brand new with penn tube £70

I would be careful about buying any rod on e-bay. My one experience has been bad.

£170 includes a reel alistair - seeing as a lot of anglers I know have reels worth £120+, this is quite a good deal.
As for the long rods, check out recent articles in Fishing Mags - they all give favorable reviews.

The long rod has been used on the continent successfully for years, what with the climate changing and our seas becoming warmer, we will be targetting similar fish and using similar tactics to the Dutch, Spanish French and Portuguese soon enough - why not learn some new skills?
The extra distance available with a standard cast on these rods could give the less accomplished 'caster' a lot more options.
Combining a rod like this with braid can also give you an advantage in rough weather, less wind drag on the line and gtrater bite detection.
In order to evolve - we need to change...... Something to consider

as i said in other posts on long rods. I watched lads in spain this year cast long long distances with 13-14 and 15 foot rods all fixed spool they even use fixed spool for boat.
I have chose to give them a good go this year so have just bought a long rod and reel and have found a soft lob even puts it out.
Alot of the mags have been saying same as fella aboves post that it may not take over from multipliers in the uk as we in uk have been using them to long but that over time more and more will go to fixed and long rods.
Or could be a passing fad but i dont see it as multipliers very very rarely get used anywere else but in uk so all them people cant be wrong.
I will keep my multipliers but the hasstle free casting the fixed spool has given me so fare is pritty good.

Heres a slant on long rod-v-bite detection.....the longer the cast the less knock you will feel on the rod if you use mono....braid will be better but not that much on little fish like some of the stuff we scratch for in matches.
The 5m length came about because of the CIPS rule on rig length...rigs could be 5m max but not longer than the rod, so if you used a 4m rod that meant your longest rig could only be 4m too.
That rule went out last year before the world championships in Portugal, the English guys told me that most of the Continental anglers were using 4m rods this time around and getting as good a distance as they did with the 5m they used before.
to some of the continental match anglers a multiplier is a risk they dont have with a fixed spool, I can see their point, and I include Ireland with the UK when I say our distance casting is the envy of the world...lots of the better east coast US anglers will also use fixed spool reels as well as multipliers. Why dont they use these extra long rods.....easy answer.....beachcaster rods can be made powerful enough to out cast the man on the end of it without going to lengths in eccess of 15ft....granted these longer rods seem to be user friendly to a novice and thats got to be good, but give one to a tournament guy and he will more than likely get a better distance with one of his shorter rods.
I think I'm ranting now  all in all.....is there a place for them....yes! will they be a passing fancy....yes!! things will settle down and anglers will use what suites them best....some will spend a lot of money finding out, already you see quite a few long fixed spool rods being offered second hand. this is a rant, isnt it.....I'm getting to fecking old....I can remember this topic 25 years ago about 12ft rods

Well said rockhopper its just a new craze u see it in the mags all fancy n stuff then u have to have it just like plugs n jerkbaits made to catch the angler not the fish! but everybody to there own if u think u need it or it will make u a beter fisherman then fair play. Personally i think its feck all to do with your rods and reels certainley some r nicer to use than others If the fish aint taking your not gona catch them
