Cheap Beginner/ slightly knowledgeable angler, new advice.

Hi people,
I'm new here,ive been visiting here for a good while now,and reading the posts,and so finally said I would sign up! Its a great place Ive found to find information,etc, and its a nice little community ye have. As the man said, the craic is mighty!

Well basically im just wondering about the Ron Thompson range. Im thinking of the Zensorflex F.S. I want something versatile,so i dont really want a say 15 foot rod. Im looking for something controllable. At the moment im using some shakespeare 9 ft spinning rod. And while i cant complain about it, for the fishing I do, Im looking for an impulse buy! I have a nice fixed spool reel, but only one spool (an Daiwa emblem 6000t,loaded with approx 40lb line. i like the reel,it does what i need it to)so if there was a cheap combo out there, basically rock fishing/some beach fishing, but it doesnt have to be a real power house. I am willing to pay approx. approx €60-70, if theres anything suitable out there for that. I came across a few on Henrys fishing takcle website in Dublin,

I understand ye guys must be after anwsering this question numerous times, but if ye have a free minute to spare if ye could maybe have a look at some of these,and give yere opinion!i know im a cheap....!!!
After all this I may well stick with my original set up for now, maybe!

i cant really help u with da rod but the first thing i would do is take da 40 pound line off ur reel and put some 15-18lb on and learn to tie a leader knot (if u dont already) use 50-60lb shockleader. this will increase distance enormously.

I have to agree with the 'fishinmidget' 40lb line used on a spinning rod :shock:

As the fishinmidget stated, you need to get rid of the 40lb line (you could tow your car with that! :lol: ) and put on some 15-18lb line with a 50-60lb shock leader. Learn to tie the bimini twist to attach your leader to and you could still tow your car, the bimini knot is unreal , but you could also cast a great deal further. :wink:

Id say id manage that bimini twist knot alright. How much shock leader would i need?Anyone reccommend any brands r that,nothing too costly, as i dont do much fishing, maybe once or twice a month.thanks.

hate to repeat but 40lb way to much change to 15lb or 20lb at most.

Also look at the mustad range good all round rods.

I started with the daiwa megaforce and a mate now uses my old rods and still going strong.

Shockleader, I would recommend you get a 4oz spool of 60lb line from your tackle shop. Probably about £8 sterling.

You can tie a lot of shock leader from a 4oz spool. Buying a small spool just because it says shockleader on it really is false economy. £4-5 for 100 yrds :cry:

In relation to length of shock leader, the length of the rod you are using, plus your drop, plus about 6-10 turns around your reel. If you are fishing high up then you lengthen your shockleader accordingly as you can then have some stronger line on your reel when it comes to lifting your catch up to were you are standing.

When choosing your shock leader don't forget you need 10lb breaking strain line for every oz of lead. e.g 5oz lead equates to 50lb shockleader, 6oz = 60lb and so on.
