I have been reading and looking at the pics of the bass being taken around our shore.

I am think of buying a new rod as one i have is a bit lite and soft.

One i been reading up on is a ocean vantage lure / light stalking rod 10ft.(Fladen)

it is the second one down.

Also useful as a general rod so as a new starter could maybe use as a flat fish rod or from rocks. until i see if i take to this sport.

When is the bass season over or can you spin for them all year.

I'm not much help on bass rods (I'm sure some of the many bass fanatics can help with that), but as far as laws regarding bass fishing go...

Anglers are only allowed to have two bass in their possession in any one 24-hour period and they each must be over 40 cm in total length - point of nose to fork of tail.

There is a closed season for bass from the 15th of May to the 15th of June each year. If you accidentally catch a bass during this period, just return it alive to the sea. Specimen bass cannot be claimed during the closed season.

The specimen weight for bass is 10 lbs and the Irish record currently stands at 17 lbs 13 ozs.

Does your current rod have a rating on the side (e.g. 10-60g or similar)?

Assuming you're in Ireland, make sure you get a quote for P&P to Ireland. I was quoted £50 sterling recently by a UK mail order company. At that price, you might be better going to an Irish tackle store where you'll get good advice and a chance to browse through the rods too. Southside Angling in Dublin have an excellent range and are very helpful.

The fladen looks fine, but you might also consider looking for a 1-3oz (instead of 2-3oz) to give you more options (e.g. heavier spinning, light float fishing, light ledgering, etc.)

flattie rod

hi there didnt get many replies but thank you to all that did.

I put question back out i got to hold one of these the other week and put it back into my thoughts.

I was thinking make a good flattie/bass rod what do you think.

Hubby got the rockhopper from fladen and this very much like it but lighter for my use.

Personally for me 10 ft is too short for general purpose. Fine for spinning and close in work.

better to look for some of the bass rods around or even flattie rods, most of these are in the 11ft range and more suitable to a range of tasks - something in the 1-3 oz range will make a good pollack spinning rod, floatfishing rod, plus general beach rod for the lighter work.
the likes of shkespeare, leeda etc produce great affordable rods in this range around £40-50, then the likes of daiwa, greys, conoflex, anyfish anywhere etc do them around or slightly over £100
